You may find that using a dedicated client more suited to the
protocol is better, it certainly will be in the long run.
I'll explain that sentence: A 'client' means the programme you run
on your computer, for web browsing it is probably Internet Explorer
or Netscape. These 'clients' talk to other computers
(called 'servers') using a protocol - for normal web browsing this is
the http protocol.
FTP is a different protocol. Your web browser can probably switch
to using this protocol and download files, but its not great at it.
So instead of using your web browser as your 'client' for talking
to FTP sites, try a seperate programme which is much better at FTP
talk.
There are lots on the net, try CuteFTP, simpleFTP or the one I
like ws_ftp there is a free version
http://www.ipswitch.com/support/ws_ftp_le_support.html
for details, helpful tutorials and a download link (at the bottom
of that page)

there's also the alt.binaries newsgroups which you may have access to (depending on your ISP). people post MP3s of out-of-print albums etc which may be of interest. 'grabbit' is a client specifically aimed at this. otherwise a normal usenet client like Free Agent should do it
