The process of un-liking music

I'm wondering at what point you decide that music you previously enjoyed is now lousy. Is it simply when it fails to move you? Is it when you discover music that's more meaningful to you? Is it when you assess the song according to a set of criteria that you develop and refine as you listen to and process more music? Often, familiarity is a big factor when influencing the "liking" of music ( or pretty much anything for that matter ). I've found it hard to "grow to dislike" music that I once cherished, even when I know that if I heard it for the first time today it probably wouldn't mean much to me. I remember Tom talking about how he loved a REM album for a while and then turned against it ( with disgust born of a musical revelation). And many indie kids will stop listening to the music they used to love before discovering "freedom rock". Has this got something to do with musical snobbery? Or musical enlightenment?

I think it's more of a sympton of the aging process. I still listen to a portion of the music I cherished when I was growing up (vintage Kiss, old punk rock, bad goth crap, etc.), but now it's almost more of a nostalgia trip than anything else. I would also imagine that as you age, your life gets considereably more involved to the degree that you don't have the time to immerse yourself in music/pop culture in the same capacity that you might've used to. Personally speaking, now that I'm gainfully employed and engaged to be married , I don't really have as much free time as I used to to go seek out obscure b-side compilations of bands and check out every new band that rolls down the pike. I still harbor an intense interest in music (and presumably always will), but I simply don't have enough time to devote to it as I did, say, in high school and college (when someone else was paying the bills, so to speak).

I tried listening to Blues Traveler's "The Hook" again recently. I tried a couple times. I really used to like that group. I was young. I was dumb. I hadn't tried to listen to them in six years. I don't know how I stopped enjoying this, but now it sounds like total and complete crap.

As far as I can remember, I stopped liking undie rap simply because I was bored with it.
