Orange Juice Remastered ?

Hi. I'm trying to find Orange Juice's second and third albums (CDs). Should I only look for the remastered editions? Also, has anyone encountered the Back to Back CD that combines these two albums? If so, other than its tacky packaging and the fact that it's got that whole bastardization factor upfront, is it in any way inferior sound-wise? Personally, since OJ has such a stripped down feel to their songs, I'm not sure what the remastering would accomplish; it didn't abolish any of the quirky charm, did it? Thanks for any info.

Oops, I guess I'm actually looking for the first and third albums: You Can't Hide Your Love Forever and Orange Juice (s/t). And these are the two that are on the Back to Back CD... Any thoughts or advice on the remastering or on the Back to Back compilation?

Tim DiGravina, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well.... seeing as I'm about to sell my copy of the Back To Back CD you could always purchase it off me and find out. I've not heard the remastered versions of both albums but the BTB CD sounds fine enough - better than vinyl anyway. The individual albums have got extra tracks on each of them though, which might swing it for you if you're a completist.

The versions I have were released in Japan through Polydor. It looks like they were remastered in 1998. They sound pretty great to me, and you certainly don't have to crank 'em up volume-wise.

Andy K, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No quirky charm is missing, so far as I can tell.

Assuming you're talking about the Polydor reissues - they sound great to me.

Dunno about the Back To Back CD, I'm afraid.

"better than vinyl"?

g, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh OK, so you don't expect a CD to sound worse than vinyl, do you? Well I've had one which did, but that's because it was an Everly Brothers thing mastered off vinyl and sounded shitter than shit. But point taken. 8-)

from the typos on the sleeve to the strange choice of lps..(you can't hide/the orange juice??? should have been rip it up!) i can think of nothing to recommend the back to back CD especally as my copy skips and sounds diabollical due to to much info on the disc..

I have the Orange Juice albums (especially the first) in about five different forms, and the "Back To Back" version is easily the shoddiest - ESPECIALLY the sound quality. It's dreadful.

Far better to stick with the vinyl, or if that's too big a leap, track down the three Postcard retros on CD - "The Heather's On Fire", the incredible "lost" debut album "Ostrich Graveyard" and the 4-track EP "Poor Old Soul". Beautiful packaging, and that real stripped-down feel you're talking about, Tim.

"You Can't Hide Your Love Away Forever" still occupies a special place in my heart, though.

six years pass...

I should have picked up the reissues back in 1998, because the CDr I have died. Everything is currently out of print, and go from between $29 and $125. Hope someone reissues them soon.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

1 used & new from $125.00

The Orange Juice
3 used from $89.95

You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

anyone want to guess on a price??

this will be great, but a shame as hunting for Orange juice stuff is part of the fun of it.

My lean period 12" ( including dub mix) was a particular ebay triumph.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

preorder price sez $60, which isn't half bad for seven CDs.

yeah, "in my house"

(i.e. have/had most of this stuff)

Mark G, Monday, 23 August 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Great to have them available, but I maybe feel this is a bit too much. Hopefully the four albums will eventually surface as single albums with the occasional bonus track as well, as I don't need three discs of early demos and Beeb sessions.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:16 (fifteen years ago)

Butbutbut where is the wonderful 12" version of "I Can't Help Myself"...?

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:43 (fifteen years ago)

I used to have the cassette version of The Orange Juice, whose second side was taken up entirely by Orange Juice's complete 12" versions. Was rather better than the actual album.

ithappens, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, me too.

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

7 CDs and no room for "Who Are the Mystery Girls?"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

Well, "Who Are The Mystery Girls?" was Nu-Sonics, not Orange Juice... and the 12" version of "I Can't Help Myself" was basically the LP version minus a few bars... otherwise, it's the same mix.

Hector Savage, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Fair enough.

God, how I love "What Presence?!"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

hoping i get this box set for christmas. mom, if you're reading this ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

two years pass...

I just got the Coals To Newcastle box after having "The Glasgow School" and "The Esteemed OJ" for years. I know it's diving into the deep end but 1) box sets have been going out of print surprisingly fast and I didn't want to miss out and 2) I quite like the comps I've already got.

I had to order it directly from Domino as Amazon wanted $20 more for it! Seems like it'll be oop shortly.

two years pass...

Thrilled I was able to get it, totally worth the full experience. The first album is a total post-punk classic and the contemporary criticisms about later material don't seem relevant anymore.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 23 October 2015 02:45 (ten years ago)

http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/2574187?ev=rb

£71 if you're in the US, £118 otherwise.

Mark G, Friday, 23 October 2015 09:32 (ten years ago)

sorry, £118 if you are in the UK.

(sings: "We are the world... ")

Mark G, Friday, 23 October 2015 09:33 (ten years ago)

Did they release anything other than The Glasgow School separately?
I think there's been another reissue of the dolphin one, You Can't Hide Your Love Forever since, possibly a deluxe 2cd?

Not sure how far into their material I'd want to go.

& thinking of the Glasgow school, the remastered Aztec camera stuff starts with High land Hard rain doesn't it? There is no reissued remastered Postcard stuff by them is there?

Stevolende, Friday, 23 October 2015 09:40 (ten years ago)

That's correct; Roddy's not keen on having that stuff out again.

Mark G, Friday, 23 October 2015 10:41 (ten years ago)

the contemporary criticisms about later material don't seem relevant anymore.

To say the least.

And I've said this elsewhere, but how old was Roddy on those early Postcard singles? 16 or 17? I don't imagine many of us would want the music we made as teenagers circulating around forever.

austinato (Austin), Friday, 23 October 2015 15:33 (ten years ago)

I would if id written mattress of wire

you too could be called a 'Star' by the Compliance Unit (jim in glasgow), Friday, 23 October 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)

Haha. Well. We can see that objectively.

austinato (Austin), Friday, 23 October 2015 15:41 (ten years ago)

Was gonna say, Roddy was one hell of a gifted 16 yr old.

Mark G, Friday, 23 October 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

Whatever happened to Zeke Manyika btw?
