Help me answer a reggaeton question from a London DJ:

Here's the inquiry:

"I'm mad for that reggaeton sound that has a lot of really fast
intricate electronic sounds in it, like the Mae Shi mix of Que Onda
Guerro by Beck. Please any tips?!!"

Any suggestions, ILM?

My tip is, predictably, that he should acquire music that sounds like what he described as he appears to like it. But legally, of course.

The request is for recommendations of other bands, albums and songs that have a similar sound, i.e. glitchy, electronic heavy reggaeton.

I'm the one who asked forks the question. thanks for reminding me that I need to buy legally. I buy lots of stuff legally, but lots of stuff is not available in London, UK where I live and I dj the stuff to get other people to buy it. Was wondering if you can point me to any stuff I could buy or download to raise awareness over here. Lots of the reggaeton sounds kind of consistent in the beats, but I'm looking for something that sounds like this (which by the way is for free from the artist's website):

Why do you want more songs that sound like this?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

(Anyway, I don't kow where to find them.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Rockit - uhhhh . . . because I like it? and because I play a hot night in London and people love it when I drop this tune. Is that strange?

It's just that I think regular ol' reggaeton (at least the handful of songs I like) has more flavor than that track (and is more interesting in terms of sonics even), plus I don't like Beck very much.

I am not a big fan of Beck either. Give me some names of the Reggaeton tracks you like. Either way, this is just a matter of taste. I'm not a big fan of traditional dancehall or reggae, I find the beats boring. So naturally I'm drawn to things that mix the genres a bit like the Beck track.

Lately, I have liked:

Voltio - Chulin Culin Chunfly (Feat. Residente of Calle 13)

(There's also a version with Three 6 Mafia, but I don't like that so much, but maybe that would work better for you.)

Calle 13 - Se Vale To-To
Calle 13 - La Jirafa
Calle 13 - 10 - Iatrévete Te, Te!

(clarinet on a reggaeton track!)

India - Bugarron

(probably too monotonous for you)

Eddie Dee & Los 12 Discipulos - Quitate Tu Pa' Ponerme Yo

(older than the other songs here, but I really like this, and it's not as well known as Gasolina or Oye Mi Canto)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

hey that Voltio is exactly what I'm looking for. Sounds great. The other stuff is a little too far from the techno/electro side of things to generally play at my club. Even the Rompe by Daddy Yankee is more my style, in case you know anything like that. I like a bunch of synth things going on in the background.

Haikunym, from the 2005 rolling reggaeton thread:

My favorite of this year: Yanil's El Color del Dinero, with awesome electrofunk beats by DJ Eric. Slammin'!

Oh and Speedy's "Nueva Generacion" is just pretty good, nothing spectacular I think so far.

I take it back: the Speedy album is 100% electro-fire

I don't remember much about either album (and the only reason I foudn out about them was thanks to that thread), but maybe it would be the type of thing you are looking for.

You might like Yaviah's "Y.A.V.I.A.H." It's got some electronic stuff sort of drifting through it.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

that Speedy sounds pretty good and I like Wiki Wiki by Yaviah, though I can't find alink to listen to Y.A.V.I.A.H. yet.

Thanks again.

if you're looking for electroey reggaeton, i'd recommend checking out the atom heart (as don atom featuring tea time) track on the coconut fm compilation - uwe calls it "aciton," for acid + reggaeton. the rest of the comp is pretty great too, spanning reggaeton, funk carioca, and cumbia. nice mix of traditional and experimental stuff on there.

Thanks for the tip. I've just purchased the album.
