Ariel Pink and ???: Touring with Local Pick-Up Bands

As many of you prob'ly know, Ariel Pink is doing this thing where he uses a band from each city on his tour as his backing band rather than touring with a band. The only other eg. in pop-rock I know of this is Damo Suzuki and his Network. (Although certainly others pick up guest musicians from town to town, eg Neko Case.) I suppose it's kind of a jazz model, but in those cases the touring musician will usually be playing standards w/ a local rhythm section, or else improvising entirely, as Damo does. Ariel's case is certainly unusual in that he's asking the bands to learn the songs for these one-off gigs.

Anybody know other examples, anywhere along that spectrum, current or past?

Ah yes, I was just going to mention Chuck Berry...

Here in Montreal, Ariel Pink's back-up band will feature members of Duchess Says and Intercom, which should be spectacular.
