How important is visuals when buying music?

When you go on someone's site, do you often get from impressed with elaborate intros and videos?

How important are visuals in selling music?

I was thinking of hiring a guy to do a music video..it would cost only 300 dollars.

I know someone.
How important are visuals when buying music? aND promotion?

how important is visuals when buying music?, Monday, 13 February 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

I don't care at all for videos, but decent site design doesn't hurt. And by decent, I mean not too heavy on the Flash and no long intros. Just a solid site that's pleasing to look at, and clearly laid out. Also, no stupid Windows Media/Realplayer shit either.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

I am thinking of selling my music for ten dollar a cd, but how can I get alot of people to buy it if I don't have mass advertising?
do you think word of mouth works???

thanks for the reply ..this helps..I have a good site, I have some club clips...

curious, why don't you like videos?? I really want to know,.

o.k..., Monday, 13 February 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

have you considered one thousand dollars a cd?

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think that I might be able to get a following that would spread the word and to sell them at ten dollars so people can afford them.
'I think 1000 dollars is asking for too much...

no..., Monday, 13 February 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Well I hate videos too,but the reason why I have ended up hating videos (because I never always used to hate em)was because I'd always get the impression that there was always more emphasis on how "cool" the video looks as opposed to the actual quality of the music. But of course the groups could just suck.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

that was a stupid idea...

I don't sell cd for a 1000 dollars...

but if I can get alot of people to know who I am through word of mouth after my cds are completed..I think I can pay for some bills..

do you think videos are a must, you think they are annoying???

you are into the music???

I am into the music..and maybe a little photos....but not to heavy on elaborates..

I don't sell my cd's for 1000 dollars, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

these are great comments.

I am thinking of selling my art for ten dollar and that doesn't include shipping cost of a few dollars..or whatever..pay pal also take some money and putting a little cup there, a donation box on the site..

but I think people just want to enjoy music...I am really working hard so people can find some joy in the world...
I really work hard on music, I think it brings happiness to people's lives...ten dollars is affordable.

maerisza sabrael, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

One thing that can definitely make more of an impact than visuals is an accidentally viral internet-marketing blitz that develops an absolutely unique, mysterious, and curiously inescapable persona for the artist.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

what about word of mouth??? that is all I can afford...

maerisza sabrael, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

do you think if people like the music, that they talk enough to other people? music companies spend alot on mass advertising...
if someone is independent..how can I reach that many people without looking like I am over-promoting myself or self promoting myself. I dont' want to look like I am promoting myself.

even if, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

someone just mentioned that they would love it if indie artists would sell their music on line for five dollars.

but the shipping is almost as much...

most people want bother paying for boxes and gas to go to a post office for five dollars.....

then I guess five dollars might be asking for too much from some people....

it cost money to have cd's professional produced..and it has to be worth it,..otherwise just mail them for free..??

someone just mentioned, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

next question..if I sold cd's for five dollars and the music was good, would people have less respect for me if my music cost less???

maybe I could sell it without expensive covers for five dollars, but that wouldn't look pro....

would you rather buy music for five dollars without covers and ingraving...or buy a cd for ten dollars with covers and ingraving and lyrics???

next question...., Monday, 13 February 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

i think visuals/packaging are important, since they give the artist another chance to express some aesthetic. but ive seen good packaging on $5 cd's and on $25 LP's, and everything in between. i say, pick the price that you want to charge, regardless of what's involved, and then find the best way to make the record for that price.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 13 February 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

I think ten dollar would be good for most people's purses...and I think I will note that the music is not cheaper because of the quality, but because I want to sell music to people so they can afford it.

but what if the music is impressive without external aethetics???
it is possible....

I do think packaging for a record is important...but I don't think the video thing and excessive website development is nessessary if the person's music is aethetic and interesting...

yea....., Monday, 13 February 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

when I go on an expenisive looking site with great visuals..
the first thing I say is..that person is putting big money into advertising...
this does not mean that the music is good..or better....

I will not buy a cd if the packaging is elaborate and I don't love the music....

that is me...

but I would prefer if the audio is very high quality on the site

I ;'ve never impressed by external, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

why do people need external aethetics to impress people if the music is great??? If the music is great, the sonic quality is great...the feeling is great?? why do you need to impress people with externals??

maerisza sabrael, Monday, 13 February 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I used to buy expenisive brand name lipstick...
I was impressed with the name....

the packaging was very expensive...

instead of five dollar lipstick..it was 23 dollars...
but this lipstick dried my lips out...now I buy eight dollar lipstick...

I admit I was impressed with the packaging...I like some visuals...

but it depends what people are looking for....

it depends how impressed people are with externals..it helps to a point to make things look nice and professional...

but like I said, not everyone is that impressed with packaging and they are happy to buy five dollar lipstick...

expensive lipstick, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

they know a lot about how videos help in sales.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Is the music industry doing well?
Are videos helping sales?

I think some videos are nice. I like some that I have seen. I don't hate all of them..they are nessessary..but they can be nice. I like to see people perform.

is MTV doing well ??, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

I am not sure how much money I am charging for a cd...if it is too low people will think it is cheapy...

maybe twenty dollars...not sure yet...
but I thinking of drawing people to my site with online contests where the winner can win a free cd...not shipping...

I was thinking of having a poetry contest where myself a couple other people will judge for the winner...

would you like to attend my poetry contest???

Not sure how much money yet??, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh damn. i should have known better.
our hearts go out to you, i would never bait you.

just forget the marketing/packaging. write an incredible song and the people will come to you.

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

I wrote a new song, I think it is nice...
but I think it helps to draw people in with some other things too...
what's wrong with a poetry contest??

hahahhaha, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

I have a very good studio now with alot of gear...
but advertising is hard to do....

I think a poetry contest and run them to give free cds to the winners will be a good way to draw people..

I may rent a camera, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

people love free things..and they love prizes and to win things...

I think frequent poetry contests is a good way to keep people's minds working and to give free cds away..

then you advertise the winner..., Monday, 13 February 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

I say that you take a cue from Ian McKaye and Dischord records! Or the Desperate Bicycles of course!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

I just wrote a nice song, I am recording it and producing it ...but I am reading about drawing people to your site...I am having new music on my site soon....

what is the cue???, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

how about the desperate Tricycles??, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I am focusing on the music heavily..and have no time to concentrate on photos right now..I was up till 3 am..recording again last night...

I am very audible and verbal..not as much into visuals..but I like visuals..when I have time I will put more visuals up..there are aabout four pics on my site now...

I wrote Meanderings..it took hours to write the lyrics...
