Ostensible both a search & destroy and classic or dud. I haven't indulged too deeply in their pond of recordings, but I'm not hesitant to say classic. Creepy, ambient audio collage and oceanic drone washes. I've heard "Lovely" and "Lightly Bred & Sweetly Tempered."

Where next?

lb&st is brilliant. perfect album.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

itunes just told me it's actually called "highly bred & sweetly tempered." but yeah, fuckin album rules.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

i'll bring in "imperial household orchestra" soon.

"Lovely" is a high point, 'tis true. I bought the original CD with barley hull pillow when it came out for my then-sweetie who still has it. The original had a high-pitched tone at either the beginning or the end that was a pressing error.

I also really like the little self-titled 3-inch CD they released, I recommend you look for that next. Unfortunately, I have never heard the polka dot record or "Lightly Bred". "Locations" is mostly field recordings as per the title. One of these guys (Rob, I think) helps to run Wall Of Sound records in Seattle and I see him from time to time, we run in the same Northwest circles.

Saw them play once at a private club in Seattle circa late 1999 and I don't remember a goddamn thing about their set except that they played behind this weird puppet stage thing. My inability to see them may have contributed to my inability to recall the show.

The "Victrola Favorites" series of cassettes (not under the CGT name but compiled by them) is also well worth investigating, home recordings of their massive 78 collection.

The four live 10" records on Anomalous are freakin' great. They're hard to find though.

Thanks for the thread, Special Agent.

where to start with these guys.. it's hard because many of their releases don't really have titles, or have memorable titles, but I really like the red polka dot album from 2001... it was one of their "rock" albums. "Telephone Call From The 70s" is great.. Jeffrey and Rob play around time, together or separately, all the time... former can be found at Wall Of Sound records, of course.

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

I was looking for the polka dot record. it wasn't there.

loved the show in seattle, may 2004

what era stuff were the playing?

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

They recently accompanied a Harry Smith film, which I'm sorry I missed. Rob is of course a great, great guy and one of the most open and knowledgeable music fans I know, and I like most of what I've heard by them.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

oh duh I haven't met Rob; I mean Jeffery. I'm sure Rob is great too, though.

Their score for SESSION 9 made the film. Super creepy.

Rob's not so great. Well, he's okay.

good score, shit film.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
CGT's Session 9 score is basically just a resequencing of their Dream Cut Short in the Mysterious Clouds album. LP release on Anomalous; CD on meme.

nine years pass...

Dunno where else to put this but this band (featuring Jeffery Taylor) is great

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuYtRCwjRJ0

Some of the recorded stuff I heard sounded like a more Mahavishnu-damaged Rangda or something

Can't decide if the band name is awesome or terrible

Wimmels, Monday, 31 October 2016 12:30 (nine years ago)

i gotta get their new one -- the cassette that came out last year was awesome.

tylerw, Monday, 31 October 2016 14:02 (nine years ago)

Picked up the Hound Dog Taylor's Hand lp on Friday and it's so so so good. The last jam, Duwamish, just goes entirely elsewhere. Do an image search of the band name and you'll see why it's a good one.

Yelploaf, Monday, 31 October 2016 16:57 (nine years ago)

No, I know the story about HDT having the extra finger and all. It's just a weird name. I've decided I like it, though!

I'm a sucker for this sort of thing. We need more records inspired by Mahavishnu / Hendrix / Daily Dance!!

Gotta pick up the LP.
