Y'know it makes me realise just how old I've become, but I think I saw the stretchheads a couple of times, but I really don't know for sure. Friends of the Dog Faced Hermans? Or is that the wrong continent/decade?

Soukesian, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

nope yr completely correct re: friends of dog faced hermans. I grew up going to stretchheads and dawson shows in the early nineties. they were always amazing. can't help with a ysi cos everything I own by them is on vinyl.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

i used to have their full-length on vinyl but i guess i sold it. suppose i should pick the cd up, as i see that the bonus tracks are the 23 skinner 12" tracks.

me too! stretchheads had the best song titles ever. "three pottery owls (with innuendo)" etc
oh and their amazing cover of "i should be so lucky". damn, now i'm going to go pull those records out.....

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

who the hell were dawson? this guy on slsk has/had tons of stretchheads & dawson stuff, never thought to download the latter because of the rather boring name.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

dawson were incredible live, the records don't capture the sheer madness of the assault on your ears. the first album "barf market" sounds a bit like the pop groups "y" being played at 78, the second album "how to follow etc" is a weird mix of the first album, dub, african drumming & sampling, and the third album i've never found a copy of. boredoms fans should definitely track down the first one though.

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

Second the enthusiasm for Dawson, esp. "How To Follow So Others Will Willingly Lead." There's a good single that came out on Project A-Bomb, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

Had just about forgotten about these bands, but maybe their stuff has found it's time.

They were indeed mental live, interesting to know how the vinyl/downloads stand up for those who weren't there.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

Dog Faced Hermans were one of the best live bands I have ever seen.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have Those Deep Buds by DFH, it didn't do a huge amount for me. Am I mssing a bunch of better stuff by them?

Pish In Yr Sleazebag is great, totally ahead of its time for anyone into Ex Models or Three One G type nonsense

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

Have a look at Jer's Stretchhead (there are photos of him with Dawson there too)

also check http://flickr.com/photos/95115533@N00/

- all 4x4skins photos are worth a look for Glasgow noise band pics! Now and then :)

Dawson were named after an art teacher at school, who also taught myself. Romping Egos EP is recommended in addition to the good info provided already.

There was peel sessions of Stretchheads too, and *I think* one Dawson one.

hughwrang aka the bat, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

I remember seeing them live once as a support act (possibly to AC Temple?). Their singer had a very nice Gang of 4 t-shirt.

Niall, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

Here's a useless bit of rock trivia, the first time I ever heard "Trout Mask Replica" was when the singer from the Stretchheads gave me a tape he'd made of his dad's copy!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

I remember a Stretchheads show at Glasgow University, not long after Pat Kane had become rector, that Greg Kane turned up at. He was heckled relentlessly by Phil about being the "forgotten man of Hue & Cry", until Phil broke the mic and it all turned into a fantasy rant about Pat spanking him as punishment.

Have memories of them supporting AC Temple once too, but can't quite figure out where or when. Manchester, 1989-ish? Remember they used to have real pointy-headstock pro-shredder Charvell style guitars, but played them like they were drug-addled cooks trying to scramble eggs anyway.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think I saw them supporting... Happy Mondays? at Rooftops.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

that myspace page has a list of some groups they played with:

The Shamen, Happy Mondays, Wonder Stuff, The Keatons, The Dandelion Adventure, The Fflaps, Dawson, Dog Faced Hermans, Archbishop Kebab, Head Of David, Big Stick, Lunachicks, Terminal Cheesecake, Hafler Trio, God, Pram, fIREHOSE, Gaye Bikers On Acid, Unsane, Wir, Band Of Susans, Common Language, Whirling Pig Dervish, Pregnant Neck, Flea, Revenge Of The Carrots and many more.

the shamen lol

terminal cheesecake was pretty great, esp. that "angels in pigtails" record.

Well, I could see them sharing a stage with the Shamen early on. Not sure about a Stretchies meet Mr C. scenario though!

Never ever heard the Keatons - anyone have anything nice to say about them?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

I also rememeber there was someone called Richie Stretchhead.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

He was the drummer

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

They were on the same label right? Moshka or Moksha or summat

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Moksha - yeah, that's right. They're still putting music out too... by the likes of the Shamen and Kosheen.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

I found 4 copies of bros are pish in the cupboard of missing about 13 years ago when a friend of mine worked there.
needless to say I was a little bit chuffed.
one of the high points of my musical career was playing in a band with richie from stretchheads and jer from dawson for a very short while. completely opened my eyes.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

moksha was / is the shamen's label.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Found you all by accident - and mighty glad I did. To frenchbloke, thanks for the nice words about Rat Records - it was my shop. Had to close for a load of reasons and miss the place to this day. Richie and Andy worked at the shop for years and Mac and P6 were often in. When we opened the basement as a second floor (on my birthday) the Stretchheads (2 h's Phil!!!) and Dawson joined for a magical jam session. I saw the band on several occasions and the energy level was without equal. Also promoted the first Fugazi gig in Scotland and both Dawson and the Stretchheads supported.
Love to all,
Jim Rat.

Jim Rat, Friday, 3 March 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Aha! I remember that show well. It sounds odd saying it now, but thanks for putting it on.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Regarding the Keatons, they were actually a great band of the same post-bIG fLAME ilk as Dawson/Stretcheads/Dogfaced Hermans etc. From Welwyn Garden City, Rhodri Marsden who has been debated on another thread, was in them for a while. They usually played with a performance artist-type madman who would create sculptures/mess while they played. One performance I recall was entitled "The Seven Mysteries of the Keatons" and involved, amongst other things, hammering 7 potatoes onto a crucifix and parading it around the venue.

They were a little bit more accessible than most of the other bands mentioned upthread. "Seven" is a great mini-album.

I think they are still together. Steve Keaton is a great bloke.

I was just listening to this EP by the band No Babies which struck me as having something of Stretchheads' spirit

I first heard "Trout Mask Replica" from a tape given to me by Phil - from his dad's copy of the album!
