There's a Wax Trax record store in Denver. Or at least there was 10 years ago. I remember it being pretty great.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Twist & Shout in Denver is a great record store. and Boulder has one of the best video stores in the country, Video Station I think it is. just amazing.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I second Wax Trax, 4 years ago.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

You can buy whatever you want to from those guys with the digeridoo in front of the Circle K. Shrooms, acid, vinyl, whatever. You'll love it. Apart from the digeridoos, but hopefully those have dried up, post-90s.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

i live in Boulder--there aren't any amazing record stores here. the decent ones are Bart's and Albums On The Hill--but I'm not sure if either is worth a pilgrimage. Between Boulder and Denver there's a place called Black and Read, which is pretty nice--books, records, CDs, vintage magazines, etc. Kind of sprawling...

Tyler W (tylerw), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, none of the record stores are great. wax trax is mediocre at best and twist and shout stinks but maybe that's just cause they never carry anything i like. devotchka played in boulder on fri and it was probably great. stars played last night but who cares. a lot of bands seem to skip this area for some reason maybe they're still adhering to streisand's boycott. boulder is for elitist jackasses who want to regulate your entire life but don't want to let the plebs live there cause it might lower their property value. move to louisville or lafayette instead.

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i'm actually looking outside of boulder....boulder is too expensive, and i live in miami now!!!

A lot more people go to boulder/denver than miami....seems like the place to go if you're headed west from the east or vice versa....miami = waste of time and money....

thanks everyone for the pointers....

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Thursday, 16 February 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've actually made little effort to explore the Boulder-Denver music scene, but it couldn't possibly come close to Miami's.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

Twist & Shout is probably the best in Denver. Wax Trax has kind of gone downhill.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

x-post:

Reggaetón could not be any lamer. I promise. You aren't missing much down here.

The Miami Bass scene is no longer.

The best things going on here are Torche, Induce, and Feathers (the non-hippie ones), and the new record store Sweat which almost got blown away by Hurricane Wilma.

bobby.lasers (bobby.lasers), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

I had one of the best used scores in my life at Records On the Hill, but it was in 1989. Pop Group, This Heat, Delta 5, Hafler Trio, just unbelievable. Like a dozen things I have never seen since. There were two stores there, on the hill. Don't know if the other one still is.

Any of you in the Denver area are cordially invited to check out my band's debut performance at the Hi-Dive in Denver, this Saturday, Nov. 3! Even if we suck, we're opening for David Kilgour, so the night won't be an entire waste ... We're called the Magic Mice, we're a rock band. 10pm.

So it looks like I'll be in Denver Sept 26-28. Can a get an update on record stores worth visiting? I'm mostly interested in techno/house/disco/soul/jazz/funk stuff, but I'll take anything trusty ILM Denverites can recommend. Also, any clubs/shows I need to know about?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 18 September 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks Elvis. I'll definitely go by. Do you know anything about Jerry's Record Exchange?

matt2, Thursday, 18 September 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

Jerry's is a great hole-in-the-wall-type place. Grumpy old clerks. Lots of jazz and blues and employees who know both. Maybe not doing so well with the economy, I dunno, haven't been there in two years or so. Good location too on Capitol Hill. Also try Twist & Shout.

Jake Brown, Thursday, 18 September 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Is Jerry's that place that has like three or four locations at a single intersection? (I haven't been to Denver in years.)

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 18 September 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think so. It's just one store, tiny and jammed between some coffee and book and poster shops near the State Capitol.

I guess I posted a similar message on this thread before ... but! The Magic Mice are playing this evening at the Meadowlark, 9pm. If you're a Denverite, come out and see us! We're also playing Feb. 13 at the Hi-Dive. And Mar. 11 at the Hi-Dive.

tylerw, Friday, 30 January 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

I should ask my friend in Denver if he's ever seen you

curmudgeon, Saturday, 31 January 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

maybe? i don't know, we're not exactly blowing up on the scene or anything. we only play shows every couple of months ... the next month or so is probably our most frenzied month of activity ever.

ANOTHER MAGIC MICE SHOW. This time at the Hi-Dive, tonight, 3/11, with Blind Pilot and The Broken West. 9pm.

it's pretty nice -- don't let anyone tell you different. there are annoying things about it, sure, but overall Boulder is great.

tylerw, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

i wanna climb the flatirons

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

flatirons are pretty easy climbs apparently. You can actually solo one of them, without ropes.

Does anyone know about the Denver Biennial in summer 2010? Bruce Mau is curating it. Didn't know if anyone had some info on what to expect.

Benjamin-, Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

i work with the Denver tourism bureau -- there hasn't been a lot of info released about the Biennial as far as I know ... but it is happening! In music-y Denver news, there's this, which might be fun: http://www.denver.org/metro/features/psychedelic-experience

I've never been to Red Rocks. Thinking about going this summer. Would the David Byrne show be a good one to pick?

Benjamin-, Monday, 30 March 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that'd probably be a good one to see -- since it's such a big place, seeing someone with some visual charisma is a good idea. I've seen some shows there where the music was undoubtedly good, but sort of hard to get into because of the outdoor setting/being so far away. fun place to go though, no doubt. Leonard Cohen is playing this summer, too, weirdly enough.

tylerw, Monday, 30 March 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I was going to go to that, but I think I'm going to the Animal Collective show at the Boulder Theatre. Same day and only a few blocks away.

this is totally my thread of shameless self-promotion. I am sorry. The Magic Mice are finally playing in Boulder this Thursday, April 23 at the b side lounge (right off of Pearl St.). here's a review of our last show: http://blogs.denverpost.com/reverb/2009/03/13/the-broken-west-blind-pilot-magic-mice-the-hi-dive/

Going to Boulder is one of the best times I've had in my life.

"Crowds of people sittin' on the grass with flowers in their hair said,
"Hey, Boy, do you wanna score?" -this is how I picture Boulder

Tyler, when is your band playing in Boulder again? I'm interested in seeing you guys.

Benjamin-, Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

haha, we're playing there on Monday ... during the Bolder Boulder 10K. So i think we start playing at like 8am over by the Boulder Theater. Do not ask me why we are doing this. But tonight, you can hear the session we did on KBCO Studio C at around 7pm MST: http://www.kbco.com And then we've got a show at the Bluebird in Denver on the 28th and then at the Marquis in Denver on the 30th. And then it looks like we're doing that Westword Showcase thing on June 13 ... A lot of activity! And then we're totally breaking up.

tylerw, Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

whenever i see MST i think.. Mystery Science Theater.

huh, was just in boulder for the first time in a while today. pretty sweet new-ish record store "absolute vinyl" on north broadway (across the street from the awesome pupusa joint). lots of records, pretty good prices. nice selection of stereo equipment/books, etc. too.

tylerw, Sunday, 1 August 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

vampire weekend and beach house are playing red rocks. that seems odd and it is very expensive, but still less than the $1800 that Rush is asking for some of their tickets.

keythhtyek, Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

ooh! ooh! ooh! i live here.

our music scene blows. aside from pavement in september, the only things our locals clubs get are groups like sick puppies and avenged sevenfold.. the like. all the commercial hits come here, oh yeah sure, but far as the indie thing goes not so much.

the elephant 6 collective exists here tho. not that i truly care for them.

um okay (kelpolaris), Monday, 2 August 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

but Candy Claws are local, well Fort Collins, and they are fabulous.

keythhtyek, Monday, 2 August 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

oh i don't know, kelpolaris, places like the hi-dive and larimer lounge get pretty solid indie bands. and the CAVE show at the further shoppe last month was effing amazing. the scene is definitely hopping: though the quality might not be super high, there are certainly plenty of bands to go around. the underground music showcase has hundreds of indie bands. dig around a little bit and you'll probably find stuff you like.

tylerw, Monday, 2 August 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

I've always really enjoyed playing Denver. Hi-dive treats the bands great and has one of the better cuban sandwiches going as venues go.

underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Monday, 2 August 2010 03:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's a nice club, for the most part. i don't know, i don't keep track of the "scene" in Denver, and the more popular indie bands in town that I have seen haven't really impressed me all that much. but there are definitely a lot of bands! and i'm sure if i took my own advice and dug a little deeper i'd find stuff i was into.

tylerw, Monday, 2 August 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

also, even if it didn't stand fine on it's own (it does), CO is a total balm on any east/west bound route

underwater, please (bear, bear, bear), Monday, 2 August 2010 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

most of the local indie bands i've seen open for larger out of town acts have been pretty crap. but then i don't know all of them, maybe there are some jewels out there. i guess though on a whole i'd rather not see them, i miss the days of two band bills, instead of having to sit through 2 or 3 local bands before you get to see the bands you actually want to see. funny thing is though denver is often skipped by indie bands whereas minneapolis is nearly always hit.

keythhtyek, Monday, 2 August 2010 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

i moved to denver bout 9 months ago, not knowing anything about the music situation out here before i came (besides, i guess, flobots and the fray and 3OH3 and all that)

i think the scene here is great! having come from somewhere where the music scene really, truly does suck (south florida, ain't no bands driving their vans down there) it's kind of amazing how many shows come through here that i want to see. i'm not used to being able to attend the shows of bands i like, and i haven't been able to go to everything i've wanted to see this summer by a longshot cos there's just too much to hit up all of it. the shows that go on during any given week here (esp. in the summer) would be the equivalent to an entire season in so fla; and i don't really attend many 'mainstream' shows afaik so i'm not sure which indie bands exactly are avoiding us, it seems like all the ones i care about come through here eventually (unless they're like only doing an east coast tour or something... lightning bolt played in miami and not here and i was pretty jealous but then i looked at their tour and they didn't go west of texas so what can you do)

the local scene is just as hit or miss as anywhere else, but i did notice that bands seem to be better rehearsed and tighter here than what i'm used to, and also (this really surprised me as i've played in bands in other states and know what i'm accustomed to) even dinky little clubs always (ime) have good PA's and attentive people running the board! i've been to shows where i was one of like three people in the audience and still the bands got a thorough sound check and sounded amazing. lots of great venues like the ones mentioned above, but also the gothic, the marquis, rhinoceropolis, the bluebird, etc. and i have found a whole bunch of local bands that i do dig. i've been to a bunch of open jams and open mics and there are lots of very talented musicians around town for sure. i don't know (or particularly care) how denver stacks up against new york, seattle, austin, etc. but it definitely has a bunch more on offer than most towns and probably most major cities as well. also, living here has been pretty damn satisfying so far! so many people have been moving here lately, just about everyone i meet is fairly new to town. lots of great scenery, etc. definitely worth checking out if you think you might be interested, a really nice city that is small enough to be easy to navigate and not face the sorts of problems that more congested areas on the coasts have.

sleepingbag, Monday, 2 August 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

i was in denver over the weekend. we stayed with a friend and did a few things. the downtown thing, 18th street and union station, was ok but not really my scene. we randomly met up with our friend's ex for a happy hour at union station but it was at this very fancy yuppie restaurant and i ended up stepping out cuz i just wasn't prepared for that lol. we all met up at a bar close by after that which was pretty cool tho. the neighborhood around the fillmore later that night was cool and much more my thing.

the next day we drove up to boulder and i'd forgotten how beautiful it is there. we did a short flatiron hike. i know boulder is for rich people and college students but the trails omg. i think i need to do a trail vacation there.
