TS: Free vs. Bad Company

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Tremendously classic, yes. I dunno about search "all," as there's some stodgy ploddy stuff on every record, but there are also amazing things like "Mouthful of Grass," "I'll Be Creepin," "Oh I Wept," etc. (Etc etc. etc.) Certainly search "Free Live," and probably all the other records for at least their better halves. Andy Fraser was a genius. And there's certainly no difficulty choosing this band over Bad Company. A more challenging one might be TS: Free vs. The Faces.

Dark Horse, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

The guitar rif in All Right Now is still one of the best I've heard.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 16 February 2006 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite album of theirs is "Heartbreaker."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 16 February 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

This should probably go in that YouTube thread, but I found this last night.

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 16 February 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and this. Kossoff!

So, classic I'd say.

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 16 February 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

Classic. One of those bands that are sadly remembered for one of their weakest songs.

..., Thursday, 16 February 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

1. First song I ever learned on guitar: All Right Now
2. FIRE AND WATER, great fuckin' album
3. Saw a video of them, though, at a some huge British festival - can't remember which one, and I don't have the video. They were Godawful - slow and sloppy and not in a good way. Stodgy AND ploddy. I forgive them!

I think they sound pretty shit in both those clips.

weird coincidence, I am listening to the first Bad Company album right now. for the first time all the way through I think! never owned a copy. picked up 5 of the original 6 lps for .99 on the bay. with shipping, it basically came out to the same as it would cost in the dollar bin, but that takes time and I am lazy. plus these are VG++/NM-- gatefold Swan Song originals. I guess I should call them "EX" but I hate EX because most of the dealers who use it really mean VG++. and the dealers who *don't* use EX, their VG++ are usually sparkling NM-- anyway. that's my rule of thumb anyway. BadCo is good. I like the three songs I hadn't heard before. Paul Rodgers is amazing.

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 7 July 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty nice how underproduced the whole thing really sounds, actually, when you sit down and listen to it instead of hearing all the songs piecemeal on the radio. anyway, sorry, this is a Free thread. um, Tetsu Yamauchi once made a record with Peter Brotzmann!

There's so much space in that performance...and on these guys' songs in general. This expanded Fire and Water I'm listening to is crazy, too: NINE 9 nine nueve neuf takes of "All Right Now". "Mr. Big" four times. Six takes of "Fire and Water". But it is not overkill. It is just kill.

Wilson should have done more rock stuff in the 70s--his "Hey Joe" burns as well.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 12 February 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

in some other thread stormy davis posted a 'tube of free playing I'll be creepin' live that made me a free convert for life

ok wow @ both of those clips. The Pickett is hottt: the dancers going absolutely nuts def. helps, too.

and the "I'll Be Creepin" is from the same show as the "Mr. Big" I posted! and it too is fucking hot (unlike the bored crowd). I love how the bass is so clear, not least because neither Kirke nor Fraser needs to fill all the sonic space available.

Euler, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

"Mouthful Of Grass" is like a great lost early Spiritualized track.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 February 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

^otm. goddamn elegant rhythm section, too.
