Hip or Dip?

My research has concluded that, even among the coolest record labels, scenes, etc. there are people who are hip and there are people who are dips, as well as bands/performers. What are some of the hippest labels? What are some of the dippiest bands on these labels? What are some of the hippest and dippiest people associated with these labels (or scene or whatever)? How you interpret the questions are up to you, of course.

Time was when 4AD had a signature visual mystique (courtesy of Evenlope 23) and the classy panache of signing argubaly seminal bands like the Cocteau Twins, the Pixies, Throwing Muses, the Birthday Party (briefly), and (even more briefly) The The....only later to play host to lamentable, yawn-inducing acts like the Red House Painters and His Name is Alive. The 4AD curse has since resulted in the Pixies splitting up, the Cocteau Twins acrimoniously ditching the label and then splitting, and once-bright-hopefuls for 4AD, LUSH, having their drummer/Peter Murphy-lookalike Chris Acland hang himself.
