Does anybody know anything abuot this website? It seems kinda cool.

Thanks. (I write for them.)

I think Dusted's most important feature is its charts, which may start to get a lot of attention because CMJ is changing its charting policies in ways that will probably benefit more mainstream music. Dusted just takes Top 30s from non-commercial stations that are fairly "indie" even by college radio standards and compiles charts from them without regard to wattage, potential listenership, etc.

They do reviews, too, most of which are written by current or former college radio music directors, and tend to cover fairly obscure and crazy stuff. The writing isn't perfect yet (though I wouldn't say it's bad at all), but most of the writers do seem to understand the music they're writing about, if I do say so myself. If you ask, Dusted will also send you a weekly email it sends out after the site has been updated.

Constructive criticism would be genuinely appreciated, by the way.

best music magazine online?

gygax!, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The curious among you should note that it's now http://www.dustedmagazine.com and no longer dustedmag.

I'm always disappointed with the Top 5, but that's not really the site's fault. Charlie has an unpretentious and very descriptive style of reviewing, something incredibly rare and quite refreshing in the world of improv, free jazz, and other out-there music. I think he'd take it as a compliment if I called him the Mark Richardson of improv reviewing, and I think that's pretty fair. I've read some reviews that have frustrated me; in fact, I started a thread based on some of the stuff from the very misguided Swayzak review. Someone who seems hostile towards beats in general should not be reviewing an album that falls broadly within that category! But (correct me if I'm wrong, Charlie) I think promos are given out first-come first-served, so that might explain some things.

How many times does Andrew WK have to pull that face? Or is it stock footage?

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, and here I thought the site was no more!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 15 November 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Clarke. I'll definitely take the Richardson thing as a compliment. Promos are not quite first-come-first-served, but almost. And thanks, gygax, for the kind words.

gygax!, Friday, 15 November 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! Yeah, that's me. I'm surpised you even remember. But I'm only behind Dusted in the sense that I write a lot and edit occasionally. It's Sam and Otie's site.

two years pass...
Is the site down today? You know, the full address, not the old one given in the thread title.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the site is down today. I check it everday. Out of all the ones I check daily only Dusted and Stylus have at least one review I want to read. I'm a fan.

I've never heard of it before but clicking on the above link wouldn't load anything up for me either.

this is a really excellent review site.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 27 June 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

seconded.

I'd still like a archive search function, but last time I mentioned it, I was told it was being worked on (+ other new site design feature) so, no complaints. I really enjoyed the year-end write ups last year too, and the (many) personal charts from artists.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Is the site working? Is it http://www.dustedmag.com/?

I just tried the address and got some link to an anti-virus scan.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 27 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Works for me. Lose the ? at the end of the URL.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 27 June 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

I tried it again without the ? and still no luck.
However, this works fine:
