and that's why they've always ruled too.

I guess I was comparing these more to other bands' comparatively moribund "reunion" records more than to previous Doves albums, though even by their standards these songs are quite demonstrative imo

"the man who told everything" is probably my fave and every once in a while out of nowhere i will just yell "GET OUT OF BEEEEEEED.." for no reason. when nobody is around. don't want to scare anyone.
i'll always love doves. never heard their 2020 album though. (and don't remember much about the 2009 album...?) but i never stopped playing those first two.

There Goes the Fear is pure therapy
― octobeard, Sunday, 23 June 2024 17:38 (one year ago)
let it gooooooooooooooo
There Goes the Fear is one of my favourite singles errrr ever. You need the full 7 min album mix for the full effect but even the single version works well. It also inadvertently introduced me to batucada so there's that.
Actually it was only fairly recently I learned it was NME's single of the year. Yessss.
Caught by the River reappeared a few years later as McFly's Don't Know Why. I'm not even sure it was a conscious rip.

jimi's previous solo album was pretty mid, so i'll pass.
otherwise yes, doves are absolutely fucking classic.
i can't believe there isn't more love for "black+white town." sure, it's a blatant pop thing, but for my money one of the more unique coffee shop fodder hits of the early 2000s. some cities in particular hits on that post-acid, post-britpop, saturating, distortiony grandeur really well. "snowden" almost feels like brill building gone shoegaze.
and yes: "there goes the fear" is a monument.
― interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 23 June 2024 18:08 (one year ago)
I still go back to the first three Doves albums a lot. Some Cities is very underrated now and is probably my favourite. I'm with you on Black & White Town Austin. The bit where he stretches out the word "follow" the third time he sings it is such a magical moment.

Just listened to The Last Broadcast again for the first time in a while and I take back what I said above, it's aged just fine - it was just my mood at the time not feeling it as much, but it's still epic and nearly every single track on it, even the interludes, are just gloriously triumphant. So much love went in that record!
I remember when I first listened to it; it was a different style from the music I was into at the time (and still sorta is now), but I felt like it was speaking directly to me in some of my darkest moments, full desperation and suicidal ideation, and those songs felt like a hand trying to pull me out of my own shit and I love them dearly for it.

i love "darker". the u.s. CD has it at the end as a bonus track. darker, valley, and zither are the bonus tracks on the original u.s. cd. i just checked. man, that original u.s. vinyl goes for a lot. i have never heard them on vinyl! i know, me, the vinyl guy. the CDs always sounded awesome though so i never sought out vinyl.
― scott seward, Monday, 24 June 2024 01:17 (one year ago)

I saw them around the time Lost Souls came out and I remember finding the gig quite overwhelming - particularly Sea Song, which was just a wraparound of bass tones. So great. Also saw them on the other stage at Glastonbury, following Sigur Ros and Royksopp. A glorious night.

huh, i had no idea "M62 Song" was based on King Crimson's "Moonchild."
this thread had me go back and relisten to their first two albums and those hold up really, really well. "Rise" is so much better than i even remembered it from all those years back.
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 02:26 (one year ago)
co-sign re:"rise"definitely in my top picks for the band
― interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 02:59 (one year ago)
also re:"m62 song"/krim connection-i remember when that album came out, it was still in the era of prog bands being decidedly unhip -- except king crimson. that definitely legitimized the sentiment for me back then lol.
i recall a music mag even doing a review on some reissues at the time saying "king crimson (the prog band it's okay to like)" f'kn lol. idk it was mojo or blender or some garbage. i bought into it for a while.
― interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 03:04 (one year ago)
For myself and many of my friends back around '00-'05 it was the connections to Bowie, Tool and NIN that got them into Crimson. Fripp also had his fingers on so many other great records too. We were all musicians who really got kicks out of poly-rhythms.
― octobeard, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 03:49 (one year ago)
yeah, my knowledge of prog was the rando Emerson, Lake and Palmer record in my parents stash. I didn't even bother taking a peek into prog music until the past five or so years but it was definitely seeing the credits of Fripp, Belew, etc. appearing so often in other music I loved.
Like, i wish i'd had a friend years ago that told me to check out KC's "Red" because it sounds like Bowie's "Low" but perverted by Lightning Bolt.
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 04:31 (one year ago)
oh so funny anecdote related to that-i found out about the doves/krim connection because i played last broadcast in the store one day when i was working at a independent record store. it had all the stereotypes attached to such a place, so not only did my pick get demolished by my elitist coworkers for being unoriginal, i got a thorough lecture on all things for the next two weeks or so.
not complaining, those guys were knowledgeable teachers. just kinda assholey about it, you know the deal.

its crazy when i think of all the stuff that came out in the year 2000 that i no longer listen to and i still listen to Lost Souls. such a huge year for indie/alt and rap and pop. i don't listen to Kid A. i do not listen to Sound of Water and a lot of stuff like it. i bought that on vinyl when it came out. i would totally listen to Broken By Whispers though. and Supreme Clientele. Lovers Rock, yes. i listened to Friends of Rachel Worth a couple of weeks ago! i would listen to The Rising Tide. #sunnyday4ever. and i know all you guys still listen to Bloodflowers. but just edging out Internal Wrangler and Fig.5, Lost Souls is probably my favorite non-metal album of that year.

I’m guessing part of their secret sauce is slowing down the track during mastering. Seems to be evident on the “rise” riff. Maybe there’s a thread on this. Other examples I can think of are the Beatles “rain” and zep’s “levee”

Saw them last night. They were great but Jimi's absence is pretty stark. Jez is doing more than a good job of holding things together, but the big man... The venue is a weird one too. It's an old docks warehouse and the sound can be really muddy. Jez was lost altogether in the mix more than once.
