nasty girls, i think its called. what is up with that? are they trying to make an ironic statement of some sort, or are they just being repugnant prudes?

di, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If only I had a dollar for everytime Destiny's Inspid Child was mentioned on ILM...a rich man I would be. C'mon -- I thought these discussions were about music, not artless cheese-whiz!

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

somebody takes themselves too seriously.

di, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking Sides: Art vs. Cheez whiz

I haven't heard the song since that one time I listened to the album all the way through. I don't remember liking it especially well. "Apple Pie A La Mode" should be a single, yeah?

Keiko, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Main negative w/ this cut is its lyrics prevent DC from dressing like hoes in the video. Or rather, they gotta dress like conservative hoes (= limited Beyonce thighmeat exposure dammit). Much prefer 'em as "regular" hoes. Song: not their best, still cool, funny, "cleavage from here til Mexico" = best line.

AP, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

art vs cheezwhiz

well obviouslyi crap all over art. literally.

cheezwhizz, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"somebody takes themselves too seriously."

How do you equate my assertion that Destiny's Child = Cheese Whiz with me taking myself too seriously?

I'd wager it is *YOU* that are taking things too seriously if your feathers are so easily ruffled. Don't bother looking for any deep irony in the product of Destiny's Child. It is well beyond their one- dimensional ability. What you see on the surface is what you get. What you get = crap.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you actually heard the song and thought about their most prevalent media images, Alew, you'd see some screaming irony in full effect. Personally, I'm ELATED that they released this song as my friends and I have been saying "Nasty, put some clothes on!" to each other non- stop since this summer.

And yes, they should release "Apple Pie A La Mode" as a single.

Dan Perry, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

people who don't take pop music seriously take themselves too seriously. its as simple as that.

di, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Nasty Girls" because it's so unbalanced, so over-the-top hysterical and sorta half-baked. It pretty much screams "DECADENT PHASE" to me. I like decadent phases.

Tim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"people who don't take pop music seriously take themselves too seriously. its as simple as that."

Hmmmmm....so you're saying I *should* take Destiny's Child more seriously? And that by doing so I will achieve a more harmonious state of balance within myself? Ahhhh, I see it all so clearly now! If only I'd let the melifluous tones and subtle lyrical intricacies of, say, "Bootylicious" spiritually and intellectually influence me sooner, perhaps I'd have attained enlightenment at an earlier stage and evolved smoothly to the next level of human development. What a clod I was passing off "Survivor" as insipid and rote piffle, when it truly contains the keys to the heretofore imposing doors of self- actualization. It all makes sense now! I am reborn! I am hearing things with brand new ears!!! OH THANK YOU!

Yeah, right.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex is like the priest in "Footloose" who bans dancing.

Tim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex realised his secret wuv for DC months ago but can't back down now w/o looking like erm [insert amusing simile here]

hence his accidental-done-a-purpose use of the dunedin codeword "cheezwizz": his subconscious is in league against him!!

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex's DC-hate is as cuddly as ever (is he one of those highly-strung people I've been hearing about?) but I'm sure he's said nice things about quite a few other pop groups/pop hits so it's the amazing specifity of his DC loathing that gets me, i.e. the arguments he uses are the ones used to condemn all pop ever but Alex only ever wheels them out for Beyonce and the girls. Maybe he's some no-good cheatin' scrub and feels guilty when he thinks of their righteous ire against such.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex -- say my name?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to say I'm not too keen on DC, I don't hate them but even where I quite like alot of pop now (no thanks to ILM) I still find it hard to listen to the girls. I really hate the tired lyrical stuff about guys and money and then about how their songs aren't about guys........and money......and then Beyonce goes on tv and looks so panicked describing how this song doesn't mean they're "gold-diggers" or something.

And to top it off the songs aren't that catchy, and one of their voices is totally out of sync with Beyonce and whoever the other one that's in sync is. Only Bootyliscious did it for me really.

Ronan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"one of their voices is totally out of sync with Beyonce and whoever the other one that's in sync is"

erm a. this isn't a mistake ronan b. it is unutterably brilliant brilliant brilliant = syncopation at the subatomic level

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan stumbles upon the CURSE OF MICHELLE; the secret weakness of Destiny's Child. It's really unfortunate because further review has convinced me that Michelle actually has a decent voice; the problem is that her raspier timbre doesn't match the smoother tones of Kelly and Beyonce AT ALL, so when she does her token solo lines they stick out in the worst way. I'm kind of excited about her forthcoming gospel album, though, because her voice is perfect for it.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer Dans' post Mark cos he agrees : )

Isn't one of them doing a "rock and funk" album? Let me be the first to say SHUDDER.

, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dan means out of sync texture-wise, i was talking abt rhythm, which do you mean?

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Texture wise. Yes. I'm not just saying that either. I suppose out of sync was a bad turn of phrase.

Ronan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh har, har and thrice verily har!

In all honesty, I don't think Destiny's Child are really any worse than, say, R.Kelly or Jennifer Lopez or Mariah Carey or Dream or Usher or *ANY OF THAT RIDICULOUSLY VACCUOUS, LO-COM-DENOM-CATERING SHIT* But, they're not any *BETTER* than any of those pinheads either....which makes it hard for me to understand why people just seem to lose their shit over them like they're the reincarnation of the Supremes or something. What makes Destiny's Child any more significant than En Vogue or Sisters With Voices (and whatever happened to them?) were? Sure, Beyonce's pretty -- but so what? You can't hear that in their music.

I've also become fond of winding people up on ILM about DC, as so many people who post here just seem like they reside squarely in the Destiny's Child hallelujah choir, and I'm here to tell'em that *NOT EVERYBODY* likes that artless gristle they attempt to pass off as pop music. I don't really sit around all day jabbing myself with a fork, playing "Say My Name" just to punnish myself. I just find DC's music flimsy and disposable, and I can't understand why someone would trouble themselves with such bog-standard product instead of seeking out something better. But hey -- what do you expect? I'm a Killing Joke fan, after all. HONOR THE FIRE!

Incidentally -- and this speaks to the recent HIGH-STRUNG thread as well -- I don't think anyone's day should be ruined by something they see posted on a discussion board devoted to music. This isn't rocket science, it's just zealous music fans engaging in their favorite passtime. I suppose the impression that I'm high-strung could be blamed on my pretentious fondness for needlessly lambasting music that I don't consider worthy. But saying "Destiny's Child should be dropped from a great height onto jagged, pointy rocks" is just much more fulfilling and fun than saying "Destiny's Child sucks." Capice?

New pop I actually CAN stomach: the new Kylie single's fuckin' fabulous.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

R. Kelly, J. Lo, Dream, and Usher are GREAT!

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DC are far better than the Supremes: RAISE YR STANDARDS ALEX IN NYC etc etc

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, you make my day. DC is still fab, though. All of us honor the fire in our own special ways...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure, Beyonce's pretty -- but so what? You can't hear that in their music.

i like DC, but i would rather take to my clit with sandpaper than root beyonce. and i'm with mark - DC+, Supremes-.

di, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None of them hold a candle to Gemini's Twin.

nickn, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"but i would rather take to my clit with sandpaper"

My, what a lovely image. Thanks for sharing.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michelle's vocals would sound better if she did something w/ her hair, maybe layering or an Ivana pineapple. Plus colour.

AP, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You goons lay off Alex in NYC......he's the only guy I've seen on this board besides me give due respect to the genius that is Mystikal's BOUNCIN BACK, so he is down with me.....I can geek out to DC in the clubs but it doesn't get any play when I'm solo......it contradicts my entire core temperature......so recognize and respect the thighs.

Ramosi, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
