sultry lounge singers - who are they?

i want desperately to listen to a sad, quiet, dramatic, sultry female vocalist singing to brushed drums and quiet bass like in movies where there's a dark basement bar/club and lonely people sitting around. have you seen Short Cuts? you know what i mean. REALLY MINIMAL drums, quiet jazzy bass, maybe some piano. i cannot for the life of me think of how i'm supposed to find this kind of music. HELP. i heard it on the classical/jazz radio station the other day and shoulda called in...

i feel really stupid asking this, but i am desperate (as i mentioned above). T_T
