Thead title inviting Popist troll-ing, but--

I can't find another thread to discuss the albums I've been listening to most in '06. These include--

Beth Orton- Company of Strangers
Willie Nile- The Streets of New York
Ray Davies- Other People's Lives
Sarah Harmer- I'm a Mountain
Robert Pollard- From a Compound Eye

(Cat Power, Roseanne Cash & Jenny Lewis have received some discussion here.) Let's be broad & include things like the Oldham/Tortoise CD and the Marty Stuart live album which are mostly (if not all) covers.

The new Willie Nile is fantastic. I'd never heard of him but got it on the strength of the Lucinda Williams blurb on the cover. AllMusic is all over the place on his previous albums 4 1/2 to 1 1/2. "Asking Annie Out"

Steve Wynn's "Tick Tick Tick" is also quite good.

here's a question - why would someone concerned about popist trolling post on ilm? isn't that like going to the super bowl and hoping you don't run into any football fans? the internet's a big ol' plac eyou know, you should feel free to explore it ie. love it or leave it pal.

Not "concerned" j blount, just amused.

you enjoy being around and engaging with people you dislike? are you a sociopath or just an asshole?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 20 February 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

also i'm wondering - what exactly is 'popism' btw? what are it's principles, etc? iyho obv.

There are many people who post whose opinions I either agree with or respect. I wanted to begin a discussion of a type of music that generally is overlooked here. Popism is a comedic term.

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Monday, 20 February 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

it is? how so?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 20 February 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

do you go on baseball messageboards and try to start threads about hockey with the caveat 'i hope noone tries to talk about baseball here'?

Since you're determined to derail this thread, let's break down the -ists. I believe it began as a slam against Islamic fundamentalists-
"Islamists" which was then turned against Christian fundamentalists--"Christianists." Someone in the NY Times did an influential article about "Rockists" which spawned a whole lot of "-ist"s. "Popist" or "popism" did not, I believe, originate in this thread. If you're so much of a totalitarian to believe that the albums I listed are
unworthy of discussion here, and that I should migrate somewhere else on the internet, then perhaps "popism" is not a comedic term, but rather an accurate description of the hateful reverse-snobbism turning up on these otherwise whip-smart boards.

And yes you better believe I police those hockey boards. I wouldn't want any actual discussion slipping in through the Stalinist ice front.

Can we chill here? I can't believe a man who Pazz & Jopped Devin tha Dude's great album and I are uselessly beefing on a message board.
