kayo dot beats cat power, belle and sebastian and mogwai. sounds right.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Monday, 20 February 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

P.O.S., Audition (Doomtree/Rhymesayers)

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

I fucking hate that Morningwood record so much.

owen, Monday, 20 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

"73 Yellowcard - Lights and Sounds"

ew.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

the indie and metal bias of that list kind of creeps me out.

anyway, what happened to that other thread from a few days ago, where people were listing their favorite albums of 2006 already? it was here, but now it seems to be gone, unless i am just blind. was it deleted? and if so, why? it was a perfectly nice thread.

xhuxk, Monday, 20 February 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

Deleted. Discussion of this is on the ILX Moderator Request Forum, xhuxk.

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Let me just say, before this thread is deleted too, that a lot of y'all are on power trips.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

the list thread was caught in friendly fire. but nothing's gonna happen to this one, so post away. lists like this, by the way, make me feel very out of touch with certain things. like -- there's a new built to spill? who knew? bob pollard? collective frikin soul?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

The Built to Spill is pretty mediocre but I guess that shouldn't be too surprising at this point.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I have not released an album called soft money!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

looks like it leaked. call yr label.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'm intrigued to see Ghost Mice on this list.. Has there been discussion of this on ILM, or are people listening to it? Or maybe just a rateyourmusic fluke? Great band, anyway!

snnnnn, Monday, 20 February 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Metal bias? There's only 12 metal discs on there, and that's if you count Killing Joke and P.O.D. (which I don't).

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 20 February 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Neko Case's record is the best so far. Jenny Lewis is a close 2

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 20 February 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Seeing DragonForce in the top ten of anything leaves me with a pretty brilliant feeling.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah! Dragonforce rule!!!!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

that Ms. John Soda is probably gonna fly under the rader, but it's a damn fine album.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

What? No Archie Bronson Outfit in the top 100? I'm loving that album so much I want to make sex with it!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:01 (nineteen years ago)

my roommate's got dragonforce on his myspace... i bet one of you is him. if so, stop fucking snoring I can hear it through the wall.

wes fu (aWESome), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Terrible list. What is it with some ILMers hard-on with the rate your music site? Metacritic is so much better IMO.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

let's hope that at the end of 2006 the list will look better, cause if that was the list for the whole year, 2006 will be marked as one of the worst ever.

french trolly, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

the rock n roll nigga (the rock n roll nigga), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

7 Destroy Rock & Roll by Mylo

This came out in, like, 1996 didn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

According to Metacritics site:

[Mylo] This debut LP for Scotland cut-and-paste artist Myles MacInnes was released in the UK in 2004 and finally hit American shores in early 2006.

[Sia] Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler (also known for her work with Zero 7) received a boost when a track from her second solo album was featured during the conclusion of HBO's "Six Feet Under," prompting a very belated U.S. release of the album in 2006.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

Vitalic cane out last year as well.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

metacritic lacks diversity in the sources they use: they ignore terrorizer/ decibel magazine type metal, [avant] progressive rock, experimental electronic, ambient, most jazz etc.

metacritic is too biased towards high profile [indie] rock. I suspect the reason they ignore metal is the generalist websites they use don't review enough metal releases.

They haven't even got Opeth - Ghost Reveries in their database !

prehaps they should have a spin-off METALcritic with specialist print and webzines for metal releases

rateyourmusic.com is superior to metacritic due it's diversity, number of ratings and size of database. However there are some drawbacks, e.g house/ techno/ electro / synth pop etc artists don't perform well - as I suspect most of these fans prefer to use the Discogs database.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

We can agree to disagree. I think Metacritic is vastly superior because the sources are better and more informed. If Metacritic doesn’t cover it than it’s off to AMG more times then not.

For each years list I think Acclaimed Music is best.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

That being said I'm going to look closer at rate your music and see if i'm wrong. I think I already know why I'm not a fan but...

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

metacritic is designed for the typical spoon-fed filter / spin / paste / magnet magazine subscriber base

the sources they use aren't better informed ! they are ignorant and too biased towards high profile releases of certain types of structured songs based music!

IMHO there is superior music outside the top best metacritic scores if you are prepared to do your own research /listening to seek out the extreme, exotic and experimental.

the size of the rateyourmusic.com database plus the user lists and reviews offer far more possibilities to educate and inform than Metacritic.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

re: Vitalic, Mylo, etc...

it's called a rerelease. see: the Go! Team, Annie, Arcade Fire last year...

and please, City Pages, get off the POS kick. just because the only "scene" the Twin Cities can seem to nuruture is terrible "emo rap" does not mean we have to support it.

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

73 Yellowcard - Lights and Sounds

Anyone heard this? How is it? I like the single. Maybe not as much as "Ocean Ave" but its good anyway.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

The argument between Metacritic vs. RYM reminds me of comments made by the rock critics of yore: Lester Bangs said that anyone can be a rock critic because everyone *was* a rock critic whereas other journos of the time (I lack specific people to call out here but I know I read the seintiment expressed by folks at rockcritics.com before) had a more strict definition.

Lester would have liked RYM.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

The thing that I gather out of all of this is that Martain has some sort of interest in RYM because half of his posts on here refers people to that web site. Metacritic isn’t as shallow as he says but I can care less one way or another, the web it a very big place. I use other places like ILM for my research and don’t agree with most user of RYM so I go elsewhere. In the end who fucking cares it’s only one opinion and this happens to be mine but don’t need to be beat up for expressing my views on this very topic.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

That's the nice (or bad) thing about RYM - your opinion is weighted as equal to anyone else who signs up there whereas Metacritic values only the opinions of those fortunate enough to get the assignment in certain high-profile media outlets to review that recording.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

is it cool if we forget the RYM/metacritic debate and go back to this thread's original intent?

so far, my favorite album is probably Goldfrapp's Supernature, since I didn't start listening to it regularly until this year (and it's released in the states this year, so it counts), but I need to listen to the Liars LP more

Actually, "You in Reverse" may be the best Built To Spill record yet.

Mr _Deeds (Mr_Deeds), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

Arctic Monkeys Have To Be # 1 So Far This Year! The only releases that could get in their way would be the Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers or a possible Radiohead album later in the year.
