[the bit in brackets is because i'm not 100% sure if there's a space or not, and i thought it would make it easier to search]

so, i'm rather late to the party on this guy, and i'm not sure that i have anything useful to say; but perhaps others more informed/eloquent than me will. my interest was piqued by philip sherburne's piece in the last issue of the wire, and i listened to the 5 twelve inches on a flight the other day - and they sounded like (almost) nothing else i've been listening to for a while (almost, as i haven't checked but i felt like a couple of tracks might have been on that last richie hawtin mix).

but, is there anything new going on here, or is it just a rehash of old plastikman 12"s? i don't know enough about late 90s minimal techno to have a clue - certainly the sounds reminded me of those records, but there seemed to somehow be more going on, keeping my attention.

so yeah, more knowledgeable people than me to thread!

Check out Mika Vainio's work as Ø, especially the Metri and Tulkinata releases. Sleeparchive is pretty much straight rip-off of those records. A good rip-off, but still...

jng (jng), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

gah.. i meant "a straight rip-off" obviously.

jng (jng), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I spelt Tulkinta incorrectly too. Not my day!

Anyone see Philip Sherburne's piece in The Wire? I guess there's more than one person releasing as Sleeparchive, although most of the releases are by Stephan Metzger (pseudonym).

I listened to "Bleep 01" a few times the other day, anyone have suggestions as to what I could search out that'll sound similar?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 20 February 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

I think they're all Metzger apart from Galactic Blob, funnily enough it sounds just the same as the rest of his stuff. I like it, I'm going to see him with Modeselektor next month. Should be fun.

A good rip-off, but still...

Vainio doesnt do live sets though! (or does he?)

Fair point! I've heard of Pan Sonic live sets, but not Ø.

I was probably overstating my point before. I like Metzgers stuff quite a bit, probably as much as the Vainio originals. He's certainly got the sound down.

You be flyin' in style!

Glasgow looks great that night!

Monolake/Sleeparchive/Modeselektor - Line UP!

Yeah, a guy I know is putting on Legowelt that night at the Liquid Lounge, having not known about the other thing when he did the booking. I think he can expect about 10 people to show up, and that's being generous.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Monday, 20 February 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Research EP / Infrared Glow / Recycle / ZZZ are all I got. Although I see Sleeparchive listed on the Modeselektor remixes. Anyone heard them?

rchinn, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard the Sleeparchive mix of Dancing Box. If you didn't know that Dancing box was the source track you'd never guess, but it's one of my favourite Sleeparchive tracks. Starts off with some static and clicks, becomes driving and minimal, gradually introducing a snare over clicks and a bassy hum, then in comes the high hat and you're in funky town (well not funk exactly but you know what I mean).

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the modeselektor remix is awesome, very propulsive.

What would Herr Metzger do if someone confiscated his reverb?

Manuel, Monday, 7 May 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Ive just been listening to samples of the new sleeparchive 10" on boomkat and its almost embarassing that his vainio fanboy career is attempting to follow what mika was doing 10 years ago by abandoning rhythm in favour of noise. It was bad enogh him carbon copying the hawtin concept 1 stuff for filler on MRI scanner and the noise lock grooves on a recent EP (whose name evades me) I mean whats the point? why would anyone wish to part with £8.50 in these troubled times for something that would have went in the mego waste basket a decade ago? Semsroth has obviously kidded himself that sleeparchive is more than a dancefloor project, the tracks on offer are limp and derivative and its sad to see someone who was buy on sight for quite a while become so pathetically self indulgent.

its just me then

straightola, Friday, 3 April 2009 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

I was actually wondering what he was up to these days. . .

mehlt, Friday, 3 April 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

i heard those samples and wasn't impressed (whoo fizzy digital noises), but i'm not familiar with this dude's stuff generally.
