Seems like there's loads of good new stuff around at the moment - I reckon this year is going to be a great one for new music.

Who's your big hope for 2006?

Sparky, Monday, 20 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Jess Harvell, a guy who's done some really important work recently.

gear (gear), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

BLACK EYED PEAS -> BIGTIME

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

BEP cover entire Tom Waits concert album? NO WAY!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

i know that was a joke but the very idea of it nearly made me jump out of a window into oncoming traffic.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

CANSEI DE SER SEXY! Any love for them on ILM?

Black Arkestra (Black Arkestra), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Nearly the entire Drag City class of 2006 looks to be amazing.

peter x (bucksbreeze), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

My tip for great things this year is Republic of Heaven. Here's their new single:

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Cansei de Ser Sexy seconded. THe album is surprinsingly strong.

snowballing (snowballing), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hot Chip

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

The new Xibit album.

Eric Wahl (Eric Wahl), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

On that note, does anyone here REALLY like KRS-One? I really don't see what the big deal is. I don't think he is as smart or revolutionary as some reviewers say. He's got a few decent songs, but shit, nothing spectacular. Maybe I'm just racist. I don't know.

Eric Wahl (Eric Wahl), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

What's that apropos of?

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno if Akron/Family are putting anything out this year but after that split EP with Angels of Light i'm really looking forward to their next full length.

CMD, Monday, 20 February 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

The first few Boogie Down Productions records are unfuckwithable, in my opinion. But yeah, what does that have to do with 2006.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

That new Hot Chip album is really great.

wmlynch (wlynch), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

The Telephone Poles.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Jesca Hoop, Matthew Kerstein, The Ditty Bops.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

nothing at all

no good records will be released this year

david m, Monday, 20 February 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

The songs I have heard by Hot Chip sound like really novelty Beck. Just to clarify, I think that's a bad thing.

This might be the year I get into T.I., though.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Fovea Hex, Planningtorock, The Magistrates, PJ Pooterhoots, Altar, Grizzly Bear, Porest

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

T.I.'s been awesome for a while, what have you been waiting for?

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Give me tracks, deej. and I'll get into T.I. right now. I have a dl'ed version of Trap Muzik that weirded me out when I realized Jeezy's "My Hood" (my fave track from the album) had a predecessor (that I liked just a bit less). Also, how could I forget about Ghostface?!!! Fishscale!!!

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, it's gonna be hard to stop listening to Anniemal (which just hit me), but I'll try.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and Rhymefest, whenever his comes out officially.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Trap Muzik is classic! His first is like his reasonable doubt, flawed, underappreciated, but very good esp. if you like hearing 'promising' rappers. His third one has some of his best songs like ASAP, What It Do and the one with Daz, although it also has some weaker tracks like the one with Lil Kim and the one with Pharell. I'd YSI some but 1) they're worth buying! and 2) (the real reason is I'm at work)

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

He's more lyrically dense (in the good sense) than Jeezy and I definitely prefer him as a rapper; he's more believable to me and comes across less gimmicky and his appeal is kind of like Nas in that his best songs sound a) lived-through because of the level of detail, b) effortless yet clearly too intricate to have been improvised/written in-head Jay-Z style.

He's also like Nas in that his explicitly crossover tracks often sound like he's trying way too hard. Thankfully he usually doesnt release those as singles.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

Jason Isbell: Sirens of the Ditch

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh sorry, deej, I meant give me song titles on Trap Musik that might get me "in." By his third you mean the new one coming out, right? Or not?

xpost

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

nevermind about the third one question. i just looked it up.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

The Sword!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

just keep listening to trap muzik dude!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

Deej I love Trap Muzik - if I had to buy one of his subsequent albums which should it be?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Urban Legend is the only one that came out after it so far. He has a new one coming out this year.

"ASAP," "What it Do" with BG, "My Life" with Daz Dillinger, check those off of Urban Legend.

Trap muzik - "Rubberband Man," "King Of The South" "Be Easy" "Be Better Than Me" The whole thing is great - I'm sure Ethan P has different favorites too.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

P$C has some good stuff, not nearly as good as his solo records though.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Long fucking Blondes

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

magik markers have solely made 2006 fantastic already

i also expect the ghostface album to be great, i like what breihan wrote about it. new destroyer is one of my favs as well, expecting the new twilight album as well later this year. new leviathan/lurker of chalice too

besides that, probably, hopefully a new amazing double leopards lp

rizzx (Rizz), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'll plotz if The Aprils actually release a 4th album for the 4th year running.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

"CANSEI DE SER SEXY!"

Ha! I thought I was the only one who knew who she was! I've been forcing my Brazillian coworker to translate her press releases!
(This Month, Day Ten showed up on some random World Music sampler next to a lot of boring overproduced bullshit with indigenous drums...)

js (honestengine), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

t.i. 'what you know' will probably end up the best song of the year.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I really like The Nice Device.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

Rollie I love it but it is just February!

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Long fucking Blondes
-- Dom Passantino (juror...), February 20th, 2006.

Exactly what I was going to post

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

(Except I wasn't going to use teh cuss word)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno if Akron/Family are putting anything out this year but after that split EP with Angels of Light i'm really looking forward to their next full length.
-- CMD (conormcdevit...) (webmail), February 20th, 2006.

Sorry for derailing the thread a little bit, but is this really all that great? I have their self titled LP and while I do like it, I don't think it's spectacular. I keep hearing praise for this EP though. Is it really something different and better?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

joanna newsom, and...

HYPHY

samg (samg), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

New albums by Radiohead and Built to Spill.

Freud Junior (Freud Junior), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

i second jason isbell and the sword and will add Ince Ore

Duck Hurting (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

pas/cal, i think this is the third year in a row. maybe a record will actually come out this year, they appear to be making progress and i am learning where they place their microphones which is pretty cool.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

johnny boy, long blondes, ghostface killah, the mind controls

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

There's an Akron/Family tour-only record (for the current tour) that's pretty good.

cdwill, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Completely agree with you on the album, solid but nothing special. The EP is much is a lot heavier though. Check out "Raising The Sparks". The acapella break down in it is one of my favourite musical moments of last year.

CMD, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

The Nice Device? The ones from Detroit? They're gonna have to put on a better live show before I give 'em any "Best 2006" chance.

And Pas/Cal keep having personel trouble (cancelling shows because of not being able to get time off sort of stuff). Marie and Francis are a good substitute for that sort of thing.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Young Knives and Guillemots

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

Deej I saw a T.I. album in a shop somewhere, and the title was about being the King of something, what is that?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:27 (nineteen years ago)

Another nod for Republic of Heaven.

Fred Street (Marcel Gallingez), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.aflit.com/HTML/bookimg/kingcats_lrg.jpg ?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Are the Guillemots the ones that did the Trains to Brazil track? That got a lot of hype without actually being, you know, good.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Long Blondes seconded.
Also Envelopes, and Be Your Own Pet.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Tim - unless its a mixtape or the P$C single I have no idea, his new album is going to be called the King but that doesn't drop til March I believe.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)
