I stopped reading Melody Maker in 1993 when I no longer knew wether the review was good or bad. Some of the writers (NB: some were excellent) were masturbating in thier writing, dreaming of becoming "a real" writer. How sad.
I sense the same thing at Pitchfork. Endlessly long reviews where the writers are attempting to write a witty short story with some "cool" philosophical/literate/"take your pick" references. INSTEAD of focusing on the music. Pathetic. Pitchfork is a great way to find out about new music but I usually steer clear of the reviews. Most of the critics seem to be more in love with themselves than the music.
And the "witty" news section is really embarrassing.
