cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

50 bucks says no one in the band is native american

jonathon, Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

50 bucks says Animal Collective are not a collective.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

jonathon, Wednesday, 22 February 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

i much prefer animal collective live than on record

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

live, i think most of it depends on their mood-- from what i can gather of my own experiences seeing them as well as others', they like playing the informal, small, weird places better than clubs or bars.

the thing is that when they're 'on,' it's amazing, and worth paying money for. so-

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 06:07 (twenty years ago)

I'll answer this question after Thursday.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Er, the answer will be "yes" come Thursday but I'll try to give an opinion too.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, the track on that sxsw site is kinda interesting. Definitely stinks of Brooklyn though.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 06:21 (twenty years ago)

"stinks of brooklyn"????

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

does being tired of primitism mean I hate rock?

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I mean primitivism

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

it does, doesn't it?

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

no, it means you hate amateurs using primitivism as a crutch

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

thus spake king math rock.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i like primitivism more than i like animal collective.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

fucking cripples

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I thought they were great last night in Boston (AC, that is). I didn't get there in time for First Nation.

On a related note, interesting Avey Tare interview (mp3) here: http://www.thephoenix.com/OnTheDownload/PermaLink.aspx?guid=8d3b783b-804c-4ca5-9f62-f51ac12c722b

Nigel (Nigel), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

colonialists!

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Saw First Nation and AC last night at Avalon.

FN was terrible. 2 guitars, a keyboard, no drums, no rhythm. A little strumming, some wandering vocals, no melody, no attempt at song-craft. Just tuneless amatuerism on display. Really pointless.

Show was moved from Paradise to Avalon, they would not have been so hateful in a smaller place. But they still would have sucked.

Ac put on a really nice show. Worth sitting through their friends. Maybe AC could just give them money not to play.

hmmm.
interesting.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 23 February 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

stinks of Brooklyn = has a certain style of affected primitivism that I associate with Brooklyn

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 23 February 2006 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Awful. I've seen boring bands before, but First Nation reached a new level of boring where I basically forgot that there was a band onstage.

And yet they were still a thousand times better than Barr (the first opener) who might have been the WORST BAND I HAVE EVER HEARD. No hyperbole -- I am completely serious about this.

Animal Collective fucking ruled it.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 24 February 2006 07:27 (twenty years ago)

were you in toronto?

i agree both first nation and barr were terrible, though i'd give first nation the (dis)honour of being the more terrible band, but yeah make no mistake they were both out-and-out awful.

and yeah, animal collective fucking ruled it.

Ross G. (scatter), Friday, 24 February 2006 08:22 (twenty years ago)

i saw animal collective/first nation at logan square in chicago on 2/25. i thought that first nation were okay really. nothing earth shattering and it was very minimal but on that particular evening they used a drum pad and they used panda's drums quite a bit. their vocals were were muddied and really that's the only thing i could complain about. the girls in first nation were really nice and i felt kinda bad that no one seemed interested in them at all. i bought one of their 7"s.

animal collective were amazing of course. except that avey's mic gave out about a minute into we tigers and when they got resituated they didn't go back to the song. understandably the moment/flow was lost of course. i just know it would have been the highlight of the evening though. :(

two weeks pass...
hey all you haters! First Nation is an awesome band. I've seen them a bunch of times in nyc and their style of experimental rock is a refreshing change from pop-oriented shizzle flooding venues and claiming to offer up something alternative to the mainstream. i think this is also their first tour.
however, to each their own. also, can we actually use the term 'primitivism' anymore? what the fuck does that mean? is that like a flesh tone crayola?

famous seamus, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

beating on a bongo like a chim-pan-zee

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, fuck the hegemony of taking the time to craft music

jmxckl, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
So I'm finally hearing the album and...well, I guess. I mean, I can see them performing at Terrastock and all, for instance, but not as a main attraction.
