ooo baby baby - smokey

ethan'll be along in a minute to suggest 'Babe' by styx

Jeff W, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thort his name was "Gilberto Gil". If you're talking about the 50s-ish Brazilian guy that does "Expresso 222"

someone needs to write a song called "Don't Wake the Baby" where every line is urgently whispered.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn! more like the BABEZBOX

Paul, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martin: do you have some supercool database or something to go nuts with listing like that, or just a super-brain which if used for nefarious purposes could rule (or at least recall) the world.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I have a database, and it's fantastic. It generates random compilations for me, as well as being easy to search for words in titles, as well as lots of other ways. I built it myself in a few hours a few years ago, then spent approximately fucking forever entering the data. It's great for finding things now. That baby/babe list, incidentally, was only a fraction of the 800+ tracks I have with those words (even after I take out the Babylons).

Obviously I have a superbrain as well, but my attempts to take over the world have so far been less than fully successful.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martin - I decided to put 'He'd be a Diamond' and Sonic Youth's 'The Diamond Sea' on a comp, before realising they shared the word 'diamond'. Driving home yesterday trying to think of a third I could add, not keen on 'Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes' or 'Diamond Lights', so - yr database (or anyone's brain) got any other diamond 'Diamond' tracks?

dan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, from the top of my brain: "Shine on you crazy diamond" from Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. But I think it is quite long.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer = OTM about Gilberto Gil, me = arse about face.

chris, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does "Soothing Sounds For Baby" Volumes 1-3 by Raymond Scott qualify?

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Diamond Lights' by the Boomtown Rats hehe

Andrew L, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooops, just noticed you already rejected that one - ok, howzabout 'Diamonds and Pearls' by Prince...

Andrew L, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andrew - ah, but the one I meant was Chris Waddle/Glenn Hoddle's 80's novelty tat.

dan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Diamonds: even before looking, Tom Waits's Diamonds On My Windshield leaps to mind. Others: Big Blue Diamonds (Little Willie John), Black Diamond Bay (Bob Dylan), Diamond Head (Beach Boys), The Diamond Sky (Chemical Brothers), Diamonds and Gold (Tom Waits again), Diamonds and Pearls (Wailing Souls), Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend (I only have a T-Bone Burnett version), Diamonds At Your Feet (Muddy Waters), Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne (Fatima Mansions), Field Of Diamonds (Johnny Cash), Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (William Shatner's is best).

Then there are the Mighty Diamonds, Neil Diamond, the Diamonds (I have two acts by this name, reggae (don't know offhand if they later became Mighty) and rock 'n' roll), Hairy Diamond, Diamond Joe or Doughboy Diamond (one of the great bluesmen names).

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stxy had a song called "Babe"

Proof that the appeal of a song with Babe in the title rests with the other words.

Dave225, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chris, you must be v. acrobatic

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
