dark idm?

I have been listening to a lot of Tri Repetae-era Autechre, Din-era Arovane, Vladislav Delay, Monolake and everything on Imbalance Computer Music, Thomas Koner and A by Panasonic.

It is a thread that I am seeing in IDM, and I am looking for more of it. Basically I want records that are a mix of equal parts mutant electro, post-Basic Channel dubby grit, and dark ambient.

any recommendations?

Surely you've gotta get 'Biokinetics' by Porter Ricks (but you probably have it already?) - I was just listening to it earlier, and it's killingly good. (Yes, I'm far behind the curve ;-)

The new Rhythm and Sound, which I just picked up, is basically ALL dubby grit - very minimal, stark, and dark, but labyrinthine and absorbing as well.

"I want records that are a mix of equal parts mutant electro, post- Basic Channel dubby grit, and dark ambient."

What you need is Posthuman - "The Uncertainty of the Monkey." It doesn't have too much dub-structure to it, but a whole hell of a lot of electro, dark ambient and grit. It's like an upbeat, occasionally- danceable mix of Autechre, Download and Future Sound of London. You can buy it at forcedexposure.com, amongst other sites.

Oh, and if you're aiming for more minimalist-dub, Plastikman's "Consumed" will work well, but it needs a bit of patience.

Dare, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dark dub makes me think Scorn.

bnw, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I should probably make that a bit more clear. What I am interested in is an IDM strain that has an electro rhythm structure with a post-BC timbral sensibility. Porter Ricks and Consumed are decent records, but they are not what I am looking for. I am not so much interested in the dub aspect of BC, so much as I am interested in their sound design.

To make it very specific, I am looking for other artists that sound similiar to Tri-Repetae by Autechre, Atol Scrap by Arovane, and Cinemascope by Monolake. If those three albums formed the perimeters of a triangle, I am looking for records that fall within the boundaries of that triangle.

mt, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all this stuff is the crappest idm ever.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so what's the good IDM?

Lew Zealand, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aphex twin - meltptacc 6

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about the Schematic guys like Richard Devine and Phoenecia? Or Mira Calix? I don't know if I'm really pinpointing the sound in the boundaries you set, but there are certainly similarities.

Honda, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan,

If you are going to beat somebody over the head with your self- proclaimed good taste, you could have at least choosen a good RDJ track.

I mean, c'mon, you just recommended one of the bad breaks tracks from Drukqs. You should know better...

mt, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe you should check out Phonem's Ilsu . I don't exactly rate it but it goes a bit into that triangle you describe. The Rhythm & Sound compilation goes a bit into that direction too although (thankfully) they still prefer dubflow over broken beats.

Omar, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The recent Dynamo comp on Din is quite great.

Andy K, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a second to Dare's rec of Posthuman.

Todd Burns, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Posthuman CD is spectacular (and along those lines, if you aren't into Thought Universe aka Mark Pilkington - you should be). The above recommends are good choices as long as you won't miss the DUB aspect. Into that pool (and a bit more varied) I would certainly toss in Andy Diey aka Black Faction/Foreign Terrain. The new Bola (Fyuti) perhaps, but there might not be enough electro in the mix for you. I think it is the best SKAM I've heard in a coon's age. Phonem's Ilsu might do it for you. Ever tried Pub (Particularly "Summer")? I would also strongly suggest exploring the Vertical Forms label - they just released a new comp on CD which is everything you are asking for, although you may not find it all in one artist. There are some nice things on the Psi Performer "Art/Pain" remix comps as well. Good luck, Mike! -jeff

mxyzptlk, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh...one more thing. There's a fairly new comp called "Muticast Presents : Futher Obliq Perspectives" which might have a few things on it which will tickle your currnt fancy. Features tracks by Multicast, Crix Madine, Freqmodif & Ted Sturgeon. Fits the dark, electro influenced ambient landscape, but isn't as clicky as some of the things mentioned in this thread. I think it's on K20 and distro-ed by Kanzleramt. I like it anyway and would suggest that it belongs in this vein. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright - I WILL stop after this. You may also want to check out some of the things on Alien8, like Tomas Jirku (anything except "Sequins", which I like well enough but doesn't fit in this thread), Mitchell Akiyama, etc. I would be amiss not to mention Yunx, Iyunx (recent CD entitled "How to Create an Explosion")and some of the old Pitchcadet crew as well - but I think Iyunx is more properly categorized here, even than Jirku (with the possible exception of "Immaterial"). There is always that whole Jan Jelinek/Gramm/Farben sound, but I'm not sure if that grabs enough of the 'dark ambient' influence for you. If it's something that appeals, ~scape has a boatload in that direction (Clayton, etc). Okay - I'm done. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THAT WAS THE ENTIRE POINT

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, say I'm the only bee in your bonnet.

Dare, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm also not sure how this fits into your recipe of darkness, but Wave of Light by Wave of Light by Scannerfunk on Sulphur has been a treat for me that seems to have slipped underneath the radar, buzz-wise. Yes, it is Robin Rimbaud, whose Scanner stuff I never gave more than a glance and a yawn. No CB chat here, and nothing to set off any funk revolution, but pretty damn cool I say.

On the other hand, it seems all this dark shit has seen its day for a while, going the way of goth cliche.

Curt, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but dare i love bees.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael, surely you've heard Boards of Canada's 'Hi-Scores' EP. Some of the stuff on there seems to be just what you're after. Also, listening to the track "Sunshine Recorder" off 'Geogaddi' today specifically reminded me of this thread.

Mr. Jeff Klein,

You are a scholar and a gentleman. Thank you for your recommendations, as usual, you are 100% on the money.

For everybody else, buy everything he recommends because the man knows what he is talking about and has immaculate taste.

mt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fyi,

K2O is actually a Kanzlerampt sublabel. Dennis Desantis from the 313 list put out a record on the label a couple months ago. Really nice post-aril brikha'y stabby minimal techno.

I did not know that you lurked around these parts Mr. Klein. It is good to know that there are some other SE mich types running around ilm besides Andy from All Music and myself.

mt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe 'Ultramarin' by Jetone?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aww, shuckins.... Thanks. :-) You never know where I'll turn up and be a pest until some foo' gets me to say my name backwards - which is a RARE thing, I assure you. Why would I be so stupid as to pronounce "kltpzyxm"? ............

mxyzptlk, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aha -- I though I recognized that cluster of letters from somewhere. Whenever your 313 posts drop into my inbox, I think 'mixes potluck'. (smiley)

Andy K, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Help the ignorant, namely me -- who is Mr. Klein, whose posts do seem both informative and friendly, a good combination.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some twit who inhabits WAY too many email lists. Former record store guy who owns too much music, frequent ebay auctioneer, erstwhile GM worker and grad student who happens to be laid off from work for the next two weeks and will probably be seen far too often in these parts. He's old, forgets most of what he ever knew (which isn't much) and is late for his 5 mile run, so he has to get dressed and out into the cold before his wife gets home and sees him at the computer in his underwear, fully evidencing that he's done squat but hunt and peck at the keyboard and drink coffee for most of the day. Nobody, really. :-) -jeff

mxyzptlk, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, welcome! Sign yourself up to the "Introduce Yourself" thread if you've not already. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you're a character mixed potluck, I will tell you that!

Hey Andy, tell Rob Theakston that Manchester United is for poofs.

mt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will do, mt, will do -- though I fear he might stop passing on those great recipes if he's harangued too much.

Andy K, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Rob sandbags on the mealtime secrets, I can step in. I do all the cooking at home...my wife might have cooked once since we've been married. I gave Matthew Herbert my recipe for Oyster dressing and norwegian cheese bake last Christmas. BTW, he also used samples of my knees cracking, beard scratching, swallowing and wife-kissing on track 4 of Bodily Functions (check the credits!). I have accrued many talents in my old age. In summary, I can make body noises AND dinner while spinning obscure records. I do weddings and parties if the price is right. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually it's track three, Jeff! Get your facts straight! Oh and btw, my knees have been creaking louder and better than that since '85, after I caught three games of baseball in a row with a wild pitching staff.

Ahh, isn't it fun to emulate the 313 list? Hehe.

Andy K, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I told you I was old and forgot things. I don't pee as well as I used to, either. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We are not emulating the 313 list, this is actually fun.

Now if we were insulting each other and endlessly debating racism, then it would be the 313 list...shudder.
