ts: Nickel Bags vs. Where I'm From

Because Ethan was telling me how much he dislikes Low End Theory and its jazz basslines. I just don't think there's that much of a difference sonically between LET and Midnight Mauraders, both of which I like about equally. Anyway what he thinks of LET is how I think of Nickel Bags. Shit is a total cheese-fest (see the video, for one thing) BUT "Where I'm From" is supreme - i'm from where the fat beats stretch for mad blocks. Also, we read Marx. I feel like lots of hip-hop from this period was shortchanged descriptively because so many bandwagon fans were in love with it for what it wasn't (violent, real, fake, dark, gangsta) than what it was, which is why an alien reading reviews of any non-gangsta rap in the early 90s would think everybody sounded exactly the same.

Sonically, they're way different. The drums are more choppy on MM as opposed to the mostly straight up breaks used on LET. MM's drums are more programmed hits over breaks or just cut up breaks. Probably the most significant similarity is both feature a Minnie Riperton sample prominently.

The aesthetic is way similar though, maybe the beats sound a little harder but to me it gives a very similar overall impression and feel.
