I keep reading about these guys on the interweb (and ILM). Has anyone heard them yet?

Ed Hawkins (Marcel Gallingez), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I strongly suggest you avoid subject lines like that in the future, about anything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Or you will fear the WRATH OF RAGGETT.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Uh, no.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh well.

Here's the new Republic of Heaven single - it's excellent:

Oh I am plotting. PLOTTING. Dumas would blush.

Aaron A, Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like the Tea Party.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Dearest Ed Hawkins,

If by "the new Arctic Monkeys" you mean no one will remember who they were in 5 years time, then yes.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I keep hearing about them on ILM as well, it's like, Republic of Heaven this, Republic of Heaven that, come on, ILM, just give the Republic of Heaven talk a bit of a rest for a while, y'know?

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Thursday, 23 February 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

i thought heaven was a monarchy

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Naah. They don't sound like a mix between The Jam and The Clash. They'll never be Band Of The Week like that.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

they sound like a mix of early Verve and mid-period U2. Urgh.

Aaron A, Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

They will have to wait it out for the 90s revival.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

They remind ME of Levitation. Not sure if that's a good thing though!

Still, despite the moaning here, I like 'em. Isn't prog-rock supposed to be coming back?

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

It already did, you missed it.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER ARCTIC MONKEYS THEY HAVE CAPUTURE THE ZEITGEIST OF THIS VERY UNIQUE PERIOD IN BRITISH HISTORY AND WILL ENJOY THE WELL DESERVED FRUITS OF THEIR LABOR FOR A LEAST A DECADE!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

stop trying to exploit ilm's obsession with the arctic monkeys.

anvsbl, Saturday, 25 February 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Arctic Monkeys=Bloc Party=Franz Ferdinand=Futureheads=Maximo Park

Well, OK, sure there are some differences, but even though I kind of like all those bands, I still prefer someone like Kaiser Chiefs, who do something a bit musically different from the rest of the bunch, sounding like Blur rather than Gang Of Four.

The 'new Arctic Monkeys'?
Are the Arctic Monkeys old?

Well then I must be a fossile. What a quick world to turn.

Caroline loves stars, Saturday, 25 February 2006 00:59 (twenty years ago)

In the NME world, where everyone who has released their debut album is yesterday's news, Arctic Monkeys are a bunch of old farts who are long since irrelevant.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:01 (twenty years ago)

NME in "not giving any coverage to Franz Ferdinand" shock!

Kapranos reported "too upset to write his fuck awful Guardian food column".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

that new teen sensation morrissey is on the cover this week!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Oasis are only on the covers because of their street team! When they get to that tricky second album, we'll see who's _really_ the boss.

That is actually very true. I remember reading somewhere, some time ago, a collection of known bands and artists recommending some new bands and artists they predicted hot for 2006. There were the Arctic Monkeys (recommending Milburn, who are very good by the way), the Kills and other bands who I would have considered too young to even be called 'known', no matter indie kids have known them for years or not. In three years time, if the Monkeys are still making records, it's gonna take them a pretty fuckin' awesome scandal to get back on the NME cover.

Unlike Republic of Heaven, who are here to stay!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:20 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

This thread... this fucking thread.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 5 October 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

This poor guy was just trying to share his love of a band and we just snarked and zinged and it just shows you what this board's become

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 5 October 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

the joke's on us though, cos now Republic of Heaven are everywhere and we're scrambling to get on the bandwagon

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 5 October 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

You're ruining Matt DC's quiet evening in the pub.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 5 October 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

It's like that South Park where people keep accidentally summoning Biggie

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 5 October 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

If this band sound/ed like Levitation I kind of want to hear them!

Blatant street-teamery like this is funny, it's the more proficient PR/band spammers, the ones nobody notices that bother me, and we must get a bit of it.

Pashmina, Friday, 5 October 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I could feel my tolerance for Killing Joke being slowly raised over the years

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 5 October 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Milburn just put out a second album and I get all the Kills info I need from Reveal magazine - looks like the joke's on 'Caroline loves stars' amirite
