is there anything i need to prepare for to get into the country with a packpack full of gear...my friend mentioned needing a letter from the promoter listing my intentions or if I'm going to be payed etc. have any of you come across any snags at the border with your gear?

thanks

marshall

Can't you just say you're doing something non-profit at someone's house and avoid the paperwork?

unless you have a work permit, a letter from the promoter won't be of much help. if they think you will be earning money in the uk, they may turn you back. this happens very rarely but it DOES happen. getting a work permit is a pain as it also means the promoter will be obliged to pay foreign entertainers tax. your best bet is to say you are coming to visit a friend and are playing a few records at a house party he is throwing / his wedding etc. do not say you are getting paid to play!

sadly it seems you are far more likely not to get in if you are a black american dj.

Or has your face graced many entertainment weeklies in the area in question?

x-post

Just be prepared to have your crates searches anyway, because obviously all DJs hide their weed with their records. (This happens to me frequently coming back to the Washington state after doing record shopping in B.C.)
