"NME editor Conor McNicholas said of big winners the Arctic Monkeys: "This time last year no-one had ever heard of them.

The great thing about the Arctic Monkeys is they are doing something nobody else has done. They have a depth to their lyrics that no-one else has."

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Simon Reynolds:

It's complicated. NME is no longer like it was at all when I was a kid. At that point, NME saw itself as a magazine about all music, not just indie rock. They would have Bob Marley on the cover, a big piece on Michael Jackson. There was a sense of journalistic responsibility, like The New York Times or something. I feel like if the NME of then was around today, they would have had Dizzee Rascal on the cover. They would have a cover story on crunk and the whole Girls Aloud phenomenon, all this stuff that's happening now. Usually now it's rubbish. It's unfortunate with the Arctic Monkeys because they are actually really good, and that's going to just reinforce the NME being so narrowcast.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Has dizzee never had a cover of NME?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 23 February 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

'They have a depth to their lyrics that no-one else has'

Is there anyone over the age of, say, 17, (aside from McClueless, of course) who actually seriously believes this to be anywhere near true?

Dead Kenny (Dead Kenny), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Alexis Petridis, Simon Reynolds, Zane Lowe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, Jerry Dammers was only 23 when he wrote Ghost Town, which knocks da Munkees into any number of fucking cocked hats and nobody ever made a fuss about his age. The Pop Group at their peak were all 19 or 20. I think the Reynolds enthusiasm for the AMs stems from the fact that now the post-House contnuum has coughed its last until the 2015 revival, the Arctic Monkeys have provided Simon with the most convenient path back to being the Rock Kid that he is and always has been.

Venga (Venga), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

NME : no surprises : no need for discussion?

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Best Film
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I don't understand what is going on anymore.

Merryweather (scarlet), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

THE KIDS HAVE SPOKEN

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

I think pretty much the last thing that entered my mind upon first hearing the Arctic Monkeys was that they were "doing something no one else has done."

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Has dizzee never had a cover of NME?

Who's to bet that the only black person that's been on the cover of the NME in the past three years is that guy from Bloc Party?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

There was this band called The Libertines a few years back, I think they may just have made an NME cover once James...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I think Outkast had an NME cover too.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Also, don't Dirty Pretty Things have a black member? Maximo Park if you want to include Azns. Surely Kanye's had a cover?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

That's still some barrel scraping. In 1986 they had Run DMC, Mantronix, Shinehead, Schoolly D, Prince, Sade and a huge Paolo Hewitt piece on how black music was ignored by mainstream media.

Venga (Venga), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Kelis?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Also: Gorillaz!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Campag Velocet had a black guy, but that might be going back a bit now.

Aye, barrel scraping is about right.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Destiny's Child had a cover in 2001.

Best Film
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Does this not show how young the average reader of the NME is now. If you'd not read the paper for three or four years you'd assume Sin City would win (I'm not saying it's the best film of last year, far from it.)

I remember the reader's polls in 1999 being quite good (mainly as the large acts were quiet that year.)

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Friday, 24 February 2006 05:40 (twenty years ago)

When I say good, I mean in comparison.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Friday, 24 February 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

The average age of an NME reader must be younger than 19 now.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 24 February 2006 08:44 (twenty years ago)

"Godlike Genius Award
Ian Brown

Worst Album
Back To Bedlam - James Blunt"

Who are these NME reader things, and how can I disagree with them so violently about one thing and yet agree with them so wholeheartedly about another?

"Best TV Show
Gonzo"

And wtf is "Gonzo"? I have never even heard of "Gonzo"!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Best Website
NME.com

High fives all round at IPC central.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Russel Brand was one of the good thiing about last night.

(E4 showed it)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm right in saying NME.com has won the best website award every year since it was online

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 February 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Funny that.
It's also got worse every year.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

merryweather otm: what in the world!?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

'the whole girls aloud phenomenon' = among twentysomething internet dudes.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

NME has "massive" posters now, like Look-In used to.

I am glad there is no article about the whole Girls Aloud phenomenon, it would be more like Razzle than Dizzee Rascal.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

What Simon Reynolds said. If it's not actually rubbish, it's not as good as it should be.

As I say, in times of difficulty, it will do anything to stay solvent. When times are better, however, will it 'relax' and do better? no, obviously.

Back then, they'd have caned The Clash if they had created and sold 'downloadable ringtones'. Now, it's the NME coining it.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

attractive women shouldn't be allowed to make music or be featured in the nme. instead there should be big posters of the guys from hard fi. each to his own!

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

> John Peel Music Innovation Award
> Gorillaz

peel, to my knowledge (ie the last 2.5 years of peel tracklistings), never played the gorillaz.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:43 (twenty years ago)

well, michael balcon probably never watched [whatever film], but the bafta award's only named after him

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Russel Brand was one of the good thing about last night.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Bob Geldof on that score.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)

what was his opinion?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

"Russel Brand is a cunt!"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

to: kettle
re: ur black

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

That pot/kettle thing makes no sense with modern domestic appliances.

Bob Geldof is indeed a cunt, but in this instance he was OTM.

Hookie was funny, reading out the Live Band award before they had a chance to show the nominees, then giving it away because Franz Ferdinand weren't there. "Live music is very important, coz no-one fucking buys records any more!"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:36 (twenty years ago)

"Back then, they'd have caned The Clash if they had created and sold 'downloadable ringtones'."

Back then, hardcore Clash fans actually caned the Clash for giving away the Capital Radio flexidisc, free, with copies of the NME!

The criteria for establishing what constitutes "selling out" sure ain't what they used to be.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:00 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand what the fans were het up about.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:01 (twenty years ago)

So, what was that all that "Lighter to your behind" business?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Why aren't Girls Aloud called Women Aloud? I find it demeaning.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

what about the spice girls?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

or the ordinary boys?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Rotterdam Termination Source threatened legal action [xpost]

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Someone please explain the Ian Brown phenomenon!

He's always surrounded by great musicians, but man himself ... it baffles me. Am I being too literal-minded when I maintain he can't sing a note?

Having said that, during the portion of the show I saw, he was possible the most polite award recipient. I'm getting really bored of the post-Oasis 'twats in the pub' attitude .. especially when they're just yet another identikit indie band.

...or maybe I just got out of bed the wrong side this morning ;-)

Jez (Jez), Friday, 24 February 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

"Why aren't Girls Aloud called Women Aloud? I find it demeaning."

If Captain Beefheart was still performing, would he be required to provide a vegetarian / vegan alternative?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Am I being too literal-minded when I maintain he can't sing a note?

That's so far wrong I wonder if you've even heard him sing. He can sing LOADS of notes, he just had problems singig the right one at the right time ;-)

Still, ECHO THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR MIC and no-one will twig eh Ian?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

In fairness 'though, he makes up for his shortcomings in the singing department by being such an energetic and charismatic frontman, having such a warm, charming and sparkling personality and being so intelligent, witty, perceptive and modestly self-effacing when he's interviewed.

Oh no, wait....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

a lot of ian browns backing band = audioweb. has been for years now.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

If Ian Brown did a session with the drummer from the shaggs, what guitar and bass would be appropriate?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, we're looking for musicians to form a band that would make music which would be like the aural equivalent of one of those little cars that clowns drive 'round the circus ring while all the bits fall off before it collapses with a loud bang?

Personally I'd be more interested in seeing Mr. Brown demonstrate his genius by performing with some musicians who'd require him to demonstrate some discipline, timing and range.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

It was a big if, granted.

But, so is yours.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I'd pay good money to hear download Ian Brown's "With The Shaggs" collaboration album.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I love those little cars that clowns have.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

And the nominations in the category of "Godlike Genius", as voted for by the readers of the New Musical Express, are....

danny invincible (michael w.), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I just had to Google Russell Brand to find out who he was. I recognise him tho.

He is a cunt.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Jeezus Shaun Ryder's really let himself go.

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah its funny that Ian Brown got the Godlike Genius awards. I mean I cant understand it, after all what has he done?!?!?!

Well off the top of my head all I can think of is that he has been part of one of the most important British Groups of the past 25yrs. Also I suppose he played quite a key part in writing one of the best albums of all time. Thinking about it he has also had a hand in influencing some of Britains most notable bands both in style and substance. Oh I suppose he has been in the business for over 20yrs and is still as popular as ever.

Apart from that and the fact that he has written or co written songs such as: Fools gold, I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, I am The Resurrection, Made of Stone, Straight to the Man, Cant See Me, Keep What Ya Got, F.E.A.R, My Star, Dolphins Were Monkeys and Love Like a Fountain, I cant think of one thing he has done!!!!!!!!!!!

Not bad for someone that cant sing, ignorant twats..........

Jon Hill, Monday, 27 February 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm convinced.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I love the Roses and like Ian Brown. I dont have a problem with him getting the award. They could easily have given the award to someone a lot worse.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 27 February 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

John Squire

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 27 February 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

ian brown was clearly the talent in the stone roses, oh yes indeed.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Why aren't Girls Aloud called Women Aloud? I find it demeaning.

They are quite ironic you know. Their first single and album were called "Sound Of The Underground".

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I would just like to say never before have I come across a forum where the participants were quite so witty and intelligent. Hats off to you people. I like this place. It made me laugh.

Russell Brand IS an absolute prat.
End of.
LLx

Laura-Leigh, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Dead we all read the rumour that it was orginally intended to be for Iggy Pop but they couldn't afford him.
