Calexico, *Garden Ruin*: Wow, dullsville. What happened to the desert (the Tex-Mex and the good and the bad and the ugly) in these guys' sound? I like *Feast of Wire* a few years ago. This is just another alt-country folk=snooze record, at least for the first few songs at least, though I notice that it does pick up speed a pinch by track #5 "Letter to Bowie Knife" and finally a little mariachi and Spanish words come in for track #6 "Roka." But by then it's too fucking late.

auf deutsch:

Wimmern, dullsville.

What's it in Dutch tho?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I guess but I don't know any Dutch (not sure if babelfish does or not).

xhuxk, Friday, 24 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

ask me

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Allow me:

:-)

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Mic B (Mic B), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

It means 'are'. As in: YOU are (jij bent).

Niels Aalberts (Niels), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Dutch bent cool, Calexico is not.

Mic B (Mic B), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

They're a great backing band (Barbara Manning, Howe Gelb, M. Ward, etc.)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

ok thats pretty fundamental i guess, thanks

er so...calexico...i think they are pretty ok. theres some eally good remixes of minas de cobre that i like - the spatial mix for example.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I never thought I'd say this but I must admit that Mr. Eddy is completely OTM in his assessment of Garden Ruins (I say this because I generally like most of the hopelessly middlebrow coffeehouse "alt-country folk" that he so enjoys deriding). I love Calexico so maybe it'll grow on me but on first listens it's completely snooze-inducing.
