I know there is a Jewelled Antler thread, but this dude has put out so much stuff I thought one thread to make sense of it all would be appropriate. If a moderator feels differently and wants to delete this thread because it is pointless, I will understand. Plus, not everything he has put out is on Jewelled Antler. I just want to know if there are any "essential" releases and your take on his stuff if you are so inclined. thanks.

A fine idea for a thread! Yeah, some pointers would be nice. I love the home-release/CDR explosion for many reasons but at the same time it makes the more prolific among musicians hard to track down. (Imagine if Muslimgauze had still been alive to take advantage of that.)

There is a new triple-lp box set that looks really tempting, but i think i'm too poor to afford it.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

from aurora borealis:

Triple LP boxset collecting "Sheath & Knife", "Grand Ravishing Extravaganza", "Sevenfold Songs of Death" and "Sturmfuckinglieder" EPs, originally released as CDRs,all very limited. Demented noise collides with blackened forest folk. A frostbitten holocaust of banjo, cello, mandolin, and percussion, with Smolken intoning his darkenend mantras and meditations from somewhere within the maelstrom...

Triple vinyl LP box set with 7 illegible inserts

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm still awaiting my box set ordered from the man smolken himself.
I have one cd and i have the rest on mp3(cdrs are pretty much impossible to track down)
Scott try the Moss/Wolfmangler split. Thats D Smolken as well. Wolfmangler are along the same lines. They have some good releases.
Also check out his other releases under the Garlic Yarg name.

You can get the DRC boxset cheaper from weird forest. $35

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Obviously Wolfmangler is D Smolken. Moss are a fine doom band from England.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'm definitely tempted now. 35 dollars is apptroaching my price range. I saw it for 50 somewhere else.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Check out the official cd release of "Death To Dead Wolves" by Dead Raven Choir, thats out on aurora borealis.
It's a good place to start.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

the box set would actually be the place to start - his harsh, noisy 'black metal' (by way of superamplified acoustic instruments) stuff interests me more than his more, eh, "theatrical" folk stuff. (not that that's bad, either, mind.)

might be good idea to check out some sounds at the DRC page before emptying your wallet, if you're wary. the leonard cohen cover is more or less representative of the box set material.

The release of DEAD RAVEN CHOIR's final acoustic album nears and is expected for August 23rd. Selenoclast Wolves contains some songs recorded in 2004 as well as the entire Lesbian Corpse Wolves CD-R. The front cover is a Jacek Malczewski painting of the goddess Nike with one sandal off but on the inside of the layout she gets into bondage as well as full frontal nudity. All the titles, track listings, liner notes etc. are written in runes except for the band logo and basic release info on the back cover.

Also Dead Raven Choir have reactivated and a brand new BM album will be out later in year/early 2007 apparently.

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR, WOLFMANGLER and GARLIC YARG history

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR is a horrid blight upon black metal and does great damage to credible black metal artists everywhere. Or perhaps it's keeping black metal alive and interesting. DEAD RAVEN CHOIR doesn't care which it is, just plays excessively harsh black metal covers of country and folk songs. The overall sound is much rawer, louder and harsher than reason or tradition would dictate. The instrumentation is built around bowed bass fiddle, distorted bass guitar, drums and screams. DEAD RAVEN CHOIR, WOLFMANGLER, GARLIC YARG and possibly also TAINT MEAT are the various bands of D. Smolken. DEAD RAVEN CHOIR is the only one that is currently active.

In its earlier incarnation DEAD RAVEN CHOIR was a creepy barbaric folk project with occasional outbursts of exceedingly harsh black metal. It was originally formed in 1996 as a duo consisting of Smolken and a mysterious woman. The idea was to play virulent black metal with lyrics taken from "Winnie-the-Pooh". Fortunately this resulted in only one half-finished song before the mysterious woman disappeared. In 1998 Smolken and another mysterious woman set more A.A. Milne poems to quieter, more restrained music. DEAD RAVEN CHOIR evolved from that point, growing increasingly more raw and dramatic. In August 2004 after two CD releases and over twenty CD-Rs, Smolken abruptly ended all dead raven activity. However, old material continued to be released and reissued, including the Cask Strength Black Metal triple LP box set. 2006 brought the rebirth of DEAD RAVEN CHOIR in an even grimmer form. A new album is currently being recorded for a 2007 release.

WOLFMANGLER's music was slow, grim, noisy and shambling doom metal constructed around a bowed double bass, one or two electric bass guitars and whatever other instruments were available. Approximately half the songs were constructed around dissonant doom riffs; the rest consisted of covers of traditional folk songs, classical music pieces and jazz standards. WOLFMANGLER ceased to make music when

Did you get the box set, Scott? It's really good.

really loved "your firstborn will surely be blind" but could not get into that wolfmangler thing i heard... something about raven skulls for the glory of crucified wolves?? it seemed almost too gray and "sale old." i dunno. i'm sure i'll give it a few more listens in the upcoming months of utter bleakness.
