THEY FOUND THE PERFECT BEAT.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes he (Pras) did.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bonus points for theorizing how the song structure mirrors ethan faves killed the radio star and good vibrations (besides the obvious verse-chorus thing i mentioned on the buggles thread). also ODB!

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck you're right, the track actually is credited to pras. damn my morning drinking plus r&b radio ilm posting. and come the fuck on, as if i ever bought the bulworth soundtrack, keith told me it was wack. anyway anyway PERFECT BEAT!

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan -- I know yr. desperately poor, but it IS on the Pras album, which is worth it for the excellent beatwork throughout, tho it has few standouts and is padded w/ filler. I got the 1st Pras, Wyclef, & Lauren Hill for a supa-cheap 3-for-1 price from BMG.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What I like about it most, I think, is the simmering hatred of society -- a political climber looking back in anger and impotence. Mya soars over the track so dead sweet and earnest and fantastic that you KNOW she's just a dream.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well i have always avoided the fugees, actually i think i was subconsciously changing the track artist in the thread title so i could allow myself to like it. i mean, there's plenty of great mya tracks, but pras, who the fuck is pras? clef can craft a beat sometimes but he's like the fucking bono of hiphop, only there's NEVER A COMEBACK just more lame attempts. honestly i have never gotten the fugees in the slightest besides nappy heads and some choice lauryn rhymes.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethen: you forget SISTER ACT II!

Sterling Clover, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that also had peggy hill in it.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it also had peggy hill in it.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

STRANGEST DOUBLE POST EVER.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She has nice thighs.

JM, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mya or lauryn or peggy hill?

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Three words: Ready Or Not.

Still almost kills me with its brilliance. *The* Fugees song, that.

Ghetto Supastar is also ace, though. Its ubiquity on pop radio - one of the few things I fondly remember 1998 for.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i cast thee fugees OUT OF MY THREAD.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mya. Duh. It's the topic of the thread, so I re-point out my often pointed out (and correct) observation.

JM, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, this thread reminds me i still have to make you that hiphop/jungle mix.

jess, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DO IT DO IT DO IT

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ghetto Superstar was on Ready or Not? Wow, Global must have been really trying hard to be hip.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wyclef shoulda been banned from the studio for [calculates offence] 18 months after that limpknob production on Canibus's first (which's still good thanx to the wurds).

I'm not familiar w/ Mya's thighs. May redress this.

AP, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So true, so true. I too loathed (almost, perhaps a bit strong) the Fugees' karaoke hip-hop, and was loath to believe anything good would come out of the break-up. But 'That Thing' is simply one of the best pop songs ever, and Pras has done some pretty decent stuff besides the marvellous 'Ghetto Supastar' (always surprised, and a bit angered, when I see him get routinely dissed rather than Wyclef). Wyclef IS Bono of hip-hop - how fucking true. BTW, doesn't Mya seems to make a habit of guesting on spectacular tracks (think Beenie Man's Girlsdem Sugar), and Canibus' first is a definite hit, too. Wyclef ain't all bad.

Wow. I remember sitting in the row behind her at a local DC music awards show a long long time ago, as she happily bopped her head up and down while a pop-rock band was onstage. Had not realized she was still around
