I've always viewed these complaints as being silly. I'm sure if Boner could help out Africa without the publicity he would. Seems like he actually gives a shit. It's not like U2 doesn't provide enough media overexposure on its own.

blathering, Saturday, 25 February 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

My only problem is that Bono's ego will be so big if he gets it the whole star system will probably slide into a blackhole. Either that, or the Stargods will return. Either way, we're fucked.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahaha!!

Bono isn't doing anyone harm, really. But is what he's doing Peace Prize-worthy?

musically (musically), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

No, it's not. And quite frankly, I'm disgusted by the Entertainment Tonight culture and its increasing stranglehold on this world. I seriously hope he does not win. I doubt he will, quite honestly. It would be an exciting new low for the Nobel Prizes though.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

i prefer his ego to bob geldof's and oprah winfrey. atleast bono's embarrassing and dirty. he's not gonna win though. they just do this/i'm not sure why though.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Rather have Bono than John Bolton.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

it's *so* unlikely they'd give it to an already famous tawdry celeb and i reckon he'd be so cringingly embarrassed if he won he'd give it back.

am i being dim? name me once that they've given it to a rockstar before. he's on a list of 200 people fur fox ache.

Susan they probably put some tinsel on the nomination list to get the publicity for the prize, then do what they usually do and give it to someone relatively unknown who really deserves it.

john clarkson, Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

This is why the Science prizes are better. Very little media influence, just hardcore dedicated people who live their lives under the radar. The Nobel Laureates in medicine that I've spoken with or know of are badass.

blathering, Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

But do they wear Bono-shades?

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

he'd be so cringingly embarrassed if he won he'd give it back.

are you fucking kidding???

marc h. (marc h.), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

*sigh* i know - LOOK EVERYONE! AIRBORNE PIG!

he's not gonna win though.

john clarkson, Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

If he wins, will there be a Nobel Peace Prize jam following the ceremony?

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

There should be a Battle of the Bands to determine who wins the prize. U2 can represent developed liberal democracies and Kim Jong-Il's Big Band can strike a chord for underdeveloped despots. Liberal humanitariansm will collide with authoritatian carnage in a rock concert sure to induce suicide! Who will carry home the world's most prestigious award?! Who will save the world from itself by crooning their way to the top?!

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

What a git- I'd have so much respect if he simply came out publicly and said something like "It's an honor, but since I spend most of my time playing music that college kids who can't afford to are maxing their credit cards to see, I'm afraid my name would make your award a farce".

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

as opposed to henry kissinger winning it or AGAIN john bolton being nominated also.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Most of the people who win it basically suck.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:49 (twenty years ago)

geir hongro otm?

gear (gear), Sunday, 26 February 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)

"That's not Bono. That's God. He just thinks he's Bono."

Binjominia (Brilhante), Sunday, 26 February 2006 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha, wtf. Do you have any idea how Nobel Prize winners are chosen? CNN doesn't bother reporting on science but the amount of politicking involved in nominating/choosing the winners is insane.

he'd be so cringingly embarrassed if he won he'd give it back.

are you fucking kidding???

There is a precedent for this ... remember, in 1988 U2 stole "Helter Skelter" from the Beatles so they could give it back to Charles Manson.

Urge has something to do with this too. I'd say more but we're being watched.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 26 February 2006 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Anyhow, see the movie and you should be able to put the pieces together.

Nominated, nothing. The game of SOCCER got _nominated_ for a Nobel Peace Prize a few years back (2001 or so).

gspm (gspm), Sunday, 26 February 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I've actually wondered when Bono will get around to being knighted. And if he is, will they knight him the informal Sir Bono, or Sir Paul Hewson? See also: the future Sir Sting.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 26 February 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

There's already a Sir Paul around, but Sir Bono just sounds ridiculous.

musically (musically), Sunday, 26 February 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I've actually wondered when Bono will get around to being knighted.

Ah, who knew that Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 February 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Sir Bob Geldof.
Sir Tony O'Reilly.

It can be done, it's just not recognised or similar.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 27 February 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Fair nuff. Seems pretty weird, though.
