My old man, a Chilean, has spent a lot of time in Bahia and has grown to love the popular tendencies of the Bahiano. What Tropicália CDs can I buy for him for his birthday (remembering he is quite conservative, he is less alegria alegria and more Trés Caravelas.

Have a heart.

Early Maria Bethania compilations, perhaps?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 26 February 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I don't think he's a big fan of Maria Bethania. More fan of Tim, or Gil or Caetano. Perhaps Tom or Gal.

okay, so get him one of those, damn.

He knows Maria Bethania, I'm wanting Caetano, Gil, Tim, Chico, something popular.

But in a Western, non-obvious style.

Tim
Tim Maia?

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 26 February 2006 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Yup, Tim Maia. I hate his delivery but you can't question his songwriting, and my dad's a big fan. Christ I was drunk when I wrote the previous entries in this thread, going to ban myself from inebriated posting.

Maybe one of those super-conservative Gal best-ofs, like "My Name is Gal." Or one of Gilberto's unplugged recs.

Do you actually want Tropicalia, then?

People have been name checking Nara Leao recently -- I think a couple of her Tropicalia period LPs have been reissued. Try the search function.

Nara's 67, a comp of her s/t record from that year and the album Vento de maio is recently out on El. It's wonderful. Nice and spare, subtle arrangements, beautiful singing. Not really psychedelic at all, though the songs are not standard bossa nova fare of her albums a few years prior.

Caetano Veloso's string of '70s albums might be good for your purposes. Starting with Joia.
