My old man, a Chilean, has spent a lot of time in Bahia and has grown to love the popular tendencies of the Bahiano. What Tropicália CDs can I buy for him for his birthday (remembering he is quite conservative, he is less alegria alegria and more Trés Caravelas.

Nara's 67, a comp of her s/t record from that year and the album Vento de maio is recently out on El. It's wonderful. Nice and spare, subtle arrangements, beautiful singing. Not really psychedelic at all, though the songs are not standard bossa nova fare of her albums a few years prior.

Caetano Veloso's string of '70s albums might be good for your purposes. Starting with Joia.
