Eastwood Guitars

For those who don't know, Eastwood Guitars is a company run by a guy who is basically taking old retro looking guitars that are either not being made anymore or are too expensive, most likely both, and re making them himself with better quality and a not so outragous price. So basically my question is that the guitar that caught my eye is the reissue of the Univox Hi Flyer (which is actually a copy of a Mosrite), but with the Eastwood model some changes have been made such as a set neck and a thicker body. I'm not so sure about these changes but I was thinking of getting one anyway. Has anybody out there tried any of these guitars? Are they as good as they sound? Any information is appreciated. Plus it would be interesting to hear from anybody who has owned either an original Hi Flyer or Mosrite.

one month passes...
my band's drummer want to get one of those too, being lefty he's attracted by the fact they produce left-handed versions for every model. Lot of reviews here:

Thanks a lot, everyone, now I want a Supro Tri-Tone.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 11:57 (twelve years ago)

thanks jjusten. i really have no excuse to buy a new guitar. i barely play anymore. but i'm going to go to the local eastwood dealer sometime and try them out in person. my reasoning is that part of why i barely play is that i don't have the RIGHT GUITAR FOR ME so if i found and bought the right guitar, i would play all the time and write a bunch of songs and be awesome.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 14:34 (twelve years ago)

if i get to the place where i'm actually going to buy something, i'll get in touch

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 14:34 (twelve years ago)

i tried out the hi flyer at the store and liked it except it seemed to pop out of tune pretty easily - maybe because of a quick guitar-store setup? or the tremolo? also tried the ichiban but wasn't feeling it as much. was hoping to check out the sidejack and mach 2 but they didn't have any in stock.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:47 (twelve years ago)

i have eastwood put non-chinese strings on the ones they ship me, because i thought the stock strings were crap (and went horribly out of tune), so i dont know if they do that for everybody now or not.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)

J, do you have the Hurricane bass in? I've never played any of the Eastwood basses, but I like the look of that one.

New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)

I haven't had that one in yet, we've sold several of the EUBs and Hi Flyer basses, but that one i havent laid my hands on.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 17:24 (twelve years ago)

i also need another guitar like not at all, but its very unlikely i am going to make it through the next month w/o buying the warren ellis 2p tenor we have in stock

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

How many guitars do you have? Seems like it would be so hard not to go crazy if you were in a store seeing cool stuff come through everyday

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

Ha, the Warren Ellis signature tenor guitar is the first guitar I have ever really wanted and I don't even play guitar, I like barely understand the basics!

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

I want jjj to hang onto this guitar so I can either go to his store or his house and play around with it

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

the problem of course is that it's tuned in fifths, and since i started out on violin its basically instant outside chord machine.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:05 (twelve years ago)

ha put me in the "i want the tenor guitar despite not understanding it" club

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:07 (twelve years ago)

We should have a secret borad for that club.

Blue Yodel No. 9 Dream (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 19:09 (twelve years ago)

jjj if you get the Hurricane in (if you're even trying) let me know via this board. I'm shopping...

I may just be daydreaming atm but what's yr price?

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

$579 iirc? would hook up an ilxor obv beyond that, but prob via email, not in a searchable forum.

AMERICA IS ABOUT RIESLING (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

thx. Thinkin'. One more q which doesn't belong on this thread but fuck it, I am starting to miss having a nylon string: you got anything decent around 300 by chance? NB last time I owned one it was a rock bottom student one but it was taking me in interesting directions...

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

i stock a brand called amigo that is made in romania that i really like quite a bit - solid top, sells for around $180. not fancy looking, but we have a russian master level guitar instructor (super fascinating old dude, was the top tier classical guitar player for the moscow symphony before he emigrated) that handpicked them for his students after looking at idk like 25 other brands, and if they're good enough for him, theyre good enough for me. he buys like 150 of them a year.

AMERICA IS ABOUT RIESLING (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

Oh wow, I was just daydreaming about budget-priced nylon guitars. Thanks Jon for asking and jjjusten for answering!

how's life, Thursday, 16 May 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

what'd it run me to get one o' them shipped to brooklyn? I come to the cities in august to visit my mom but dammit now is when I have $.

Interestingly I have a ton of recordings by the Moscow SO under William Stromberg. They did a long series of golden age film music recreations on Naxos and now on an indie label called Tribute Film Classics. I'll bet your dude plays on this disc of Treasure of the Sierra Madre...

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 May 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

check for 4n4t0Li 5h4p1ro.

since i can't do really any hookup on the price on that cheapo classical, i'd make up for it by just shipping it to you for free via ups if that works.

AMERICA IS ABOUT RIESLING (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 May 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

Consider me enticed! Now I just gotta feel out how the wife might feel abt another guitar entering the apt! Wish me luck.

2 huxtables and a sousaphone (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 May 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

went to the guitar store and played all the eastwoods they had again yesterday and the baritones were my favorite. now i just need to convince myself i actually need a baritone guitar.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 May 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)

that moon guitar is rad not ugly!

random access mammaries (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:00 (twelve years ago)

seems like you'd want it to hook the other way so it could sit on your leg when you play sitting down

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

feel like i'd knock my funny bone on that point

goole, Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

a lot of the guitars in their ugly contest are pretty cool! the moon one is neat but does look pretty uncomfortable plus fuck the moon. my favorite on there is the Jolana Star IX.

wk, Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

the wandré guitar that's winning (losing?) the vote is pretty amazingly baroque. I think some of the models that eastwood has in production are actually uglier than a lot of these guitars in the ugly contest. Like that green messenger with the dumb looking f holes and the out of proportion bouts.

five months pass...

This is a really cool thing to do!

I have two Eastwoods, both lefties. A Breadwinner and a Sidejack, which is kinda like the Hi-Flyer, it's a Mosrite copy. I'm very happy with them both. The quality is very good for the price, in my opinion. I've also got a couple of Fenders, a Gibson and a Ric among other guitars, so I've been around, so to speak. I'd buy Eastwood again, absolutely. Good customer service, too.
