Famous People Like Them! You Should Too!

From today's Pitchfork story on the Os Mutantes semi-reunion:

In 1993, Cobain attempted to reunite the band, but they refused. Oh, snap! David Byrne's Luaka Bop label released the Os Mutantes compilation Everything Is Possible. Beck has also given the band mad props. So this is a pretty big deal.

The celebrity endorsement is my absolute least favorite hack technique. I hate it even more than "...on acid" or "...from hell."

Oh, snap! is pretty threadbare awready, too. And I only became aware of it a week or so ago in the German engineering in da house TV commercial.

Look, famous people just matter more than you do. GET OVER IT.

Celebs are people, too.

However, no Rita Lee, no credibility.

Sometimes I don't mind celeb endorsement, but the "Bowie was there" thing is really getting on my nerves lately.

For a while I was thinking about trying to get Jimmy Carter to make a celebrity appearance at one of my band's shows.

What's funny is that celeb musical celeb endorsements of bands actually make more sense then, say, a celeb endorsing a shampoo or razor.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 27 February 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

how so?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

well, theoretically they've established some kind of musical trust with their fans, as opposed to recommending a product which doesn't have any special relation to them

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh, okay, you mean celeb musicians endorsing other music. I was thinking like, celebs in general.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah. that said, I went to music school because Phoebe Cates said it was cool*

I would have preferred this take:

In 1993, Cobain attempted to reunite the band, but they refused. Oh, snap! Cobain responded by taking his own life a year later.

i have found famous people are the most wanting of information of the "whats cool to listen to" variety..there are some who follow music but most of them are too bizzy and nned pickers during their runs thru tower records

probably the worst building in all of dublin is the busarus bus terminal
really grim looking, horrible plastic crap, its from the late sixties i think
everyone hates it
but to this day it is regarded by architects all over the world as one of the best examples of public buildings

i gave up on trusting musicians opinions on music when timbaland started shiteing on about coldplay and metallica

For a while I was thinking about trying to get Jimmy Walker to make a celebrity appearance at one of my band's shows

For awhile I was trying to figure out how to trick Soupy Sales and Don Knotts into coming to a Dick Destiny show.

How many of Jay-Z's fans do you suppose are rushing out to buy Fall Out Boy CDs?

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Chisellers!

"mad props"

"Oh, snap!"

ok, i get it, i've overstood, you're a recovering indie fan.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

the "Oh, snap!" doesn't even make sense.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah it's a pretty mild snap.
