Herbert - Scale (2006)

This is great. Funky (sometimes subtle, sometimes not) and great use of an orchestra. It's surprisingly accessible too after last year's 'Plat du jour' solo album. I'm not sure how much of this is "found sound," but I believe there's very little at all, except for track 10, which uses 150+ sounds that fans sent in for him to use. I'll be buying this one in May for sure.

already some discussion on microhouse at its most wack, FYI, though a clearly titled thread on the same seems fine.

I saw it go up last night, but hesitated to grab it for this very fear (inaccesibility). I'll probably get it now, though.

I love this album, but I don't really want to talk about it here. I just noticed on the CD there's small print along the lines of: "Matthew Herbert, frustrated with current nations, decided to start his own country. You can become a member here - www.countryx.org."

I went to the page and signed up. So far it seems to be... nothing. Does anybody have any clue what this is/will be? Please tell me it's something more than I just got tricked into signing up for an advertising mailing list.

I really dislike this album, Herbert loves disappointing me though so I wasn't surprised.

I wouldn't worry about the advertising aspect, Herberts probably too lefty and conceptual for that, it'll probably be some daft shit though.

album of the year so far. he might be listening to kelley polar quite often. love this.

kinda surprised at the lack of comment here. (ditto no girl talk thread til recently). harmonise is easily one of the best songs i've heard all year. (kinda reminds me of jim o'rourke's eureka/halfway to a threeway/insignificance stuff.)

I've never been able to get into any Herbert. I kind of liked around the house (the song, not album) but even still.

I am seeing him play live tonight actually. So maybe he'll change my mind.

he might be listening to kelley polar quite often.

huh? this makes no sense. the album seems to be a continuation of his sound from 'around the house' through 'bodily functions' to the roisin record. maybe you've been listening to kelley polar quite often & i dare say Herbert has heard it but there's no "influence" there.

does anyone know what happened between matthew and dani siciliano?

el juan (el juan), Saturday, 26 August 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

i saw him do a set the other night, and while at times i thought he was being too kind to the crowd, there were some beautiful moments. like when he went from hard minimal tech to 'don't stop til you get enough,' seamlessly. i mean, it happens a lot with the mj, but it was very nice.

I love this. I feel like it's something of a return to a more familiar Herbert, but without necessarily regressing.

I was initially a bit put off by Plat du Jour, but it seems like when I put it on now, I can't turn it off without listening to the entire disc. Of course, I did work in restaurants for years so the sounds used are particularly familiar and therefore hypnotic for me. It's been a "sleeper" that I've listened to more since I received the new record as a well-timed gift.

Funny, I just put this on about 10 minutes ago. It was in my top 10 in 2006, but I think I may have even underrated it.

jaymc, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

I love this a ton

beautiful album

jabba hands, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 01:56 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, over the years this one (which I almost disliked at very first) has risen to match 'Bodily Functions'. So maybe the second Mathew Herbert Big Band album will grow on me, too. . .
