"The Heat is On" doesn't quite fit with the other three.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:00 (twenty years ago)

"Ghostbusters"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

The entire recorded output of Hongroe.

Or that picture of the guy who looks like Preston Ordinary Boys sucking his own cock.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

"Ghostbusters" still suffers from that horrible squealing delivery of the title word itself. Everything else about it pretty well rules.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Ghostbusters

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

"I can't hear you . . . "

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

"Pop Musik", but I'm missing the link (if there is one?)

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

geir's tonedeaf is the link

i'm leaning 'pop muzik' with 'new drug' second, for that drum artillery in 'one that won't make me nervous! *BOOM* wondering what to do! *BOOM*' also for huey lewis' ridiculous lasviciousness during 'when i'm alone with you baby' and then the slightly prog sax solo. fuckit - 'new drug' FIRST!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Bustin' makes me feel good.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:41 (twenty years ago)

who's cameo in the "ghostbusters" video do you enjoy most?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:43 (twenty years ago)

"Pop Muzik," probably, by, you know, miles or whatever.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:43 (twenty years ago)

but I'm missing the link

?

i've always thought "ghostbusters" and "pop muzik" were the same song, at least.

"ghostbusters", though, all the way. preferably played on a commodore 64 SID chip.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

banananana banana

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

The SID chipped Ghostbusters theme is a thing of beauty, indeed. With a bouncing ball for you to sing along with the words on the screen as well!

I need to YSI the SID chipped conversion of "She Blinded Me With Science" one day. It literally is someone playing the cassette into a C64 and saving what noises come out. It sounds like V/Vm.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Pop Muuzik.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 01:47 (twenty years ago)

what a clever thread; never would've guessed the outcome

fucking shut the fuck up

And and and and and!! The guitar player riffs on "Purple Haze" during the solo!!!

Still, "Pop Muzik."

phil d. (Phil D.), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Where is that thread with the hypothesis that 'Ghostbuters' was writen about drug enforcement officers a number of years before the film was even written. Slays me every time that one.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Somebody's got to represent for Huey.

I Want A New Drug

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Pop Muzik - 100 points
I Want A New Drug - 87 points
Ghostbusters - 56 points
The Heat Is On - 7 points

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Saw the weirdest air guitar version of The Heat Is On in middle school talent show. Dude was just standing up there alone on stage, no props, playing air guitar and lip-synching The Heat Is On. He was constantly looking at the floor, and then when the word "on" would come he would look up in point at the audience. Yeah! Weirdest fucking thing ever. If I had known about surreal or performance art at this point in my life, it would have made sense.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and all 4 songs have something going for it:
Pop Muzik: Quirk
I Want A New Drug: Cheese
Ghostbusters: Nostalgia
The Heat is On: Miami Vice

But the real answer is "Word Up".

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Ghostbusters: Nostalgia

Don't they all have a bit of this?

The Heat is On: Miami Vice

Another 48 Hours, actually.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, you're right. I was thinking of Smuggler's Blues, another blast from the crapst.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

The Heat is On: Miami Vice

No and No. Try Beverly Hills Cop.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Gaa. Yes.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

"Beverly Hills Cop" yes.

That soundtrack did spawn at least one classic song, but "The Heat Is One" was not the one.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

neutron dance?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

God help you if you're implying "Axel F".

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Remembered where I heard it:

the Most hilarious fanboy message board debate of all time

The most eerie thing about Ray Parker Jr's 1985 hit 'Ghostbusters' is that the song was written five years earlier and completely independently of the hit movie with which it eventually became associated.
In 1980, Ray had decided to invent some street slang, a sample of which follows:
? 'Ghost' = 'Angel Dust'
? 'Buster' = 'Supplier'
? 'Strange' = 'Normal'
? 'Neighbourhood' = 'Brain'
For those au fait with Ray's lingo, the lyric 'If there's something strange in your neighbourhood, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters' attained a chilling edginess not matched until Whitney Houston released her acclaimed ode to masturbation ('The Greatest Love of All').
Sadly, Ray's proposed slang never took off as hoped and his cutting-edge single was generally considered indecipherable nonsense until the release of 'Ghostbusters', the movie. And, you know, even after that, really.
(An interesting footnote: Ray Parker, Jr is the son of Ray Parker, Sr)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Geir's ranking totally predictable but also 100% right (for once.) "Pop Muzik" was as bizarre as anything else on 1979 radio (or 1983 radio, or '84 radio for that matter.) "The Heat Is On" is more evidence that Glenn Frey is surely the most dullest Detroit native in the history of music. And I'm too lazy & busy to say anything about Huey or Ray.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

six years pass...

i've had 'i want a new drug' stuck on repeat in my head all day for some reason.

omar little, Thursday, 7 June 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do?
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you.

Funny, I've adored "Pop Muzik" for 30+ years but I never investigated a single song further from M.
