Stars' "Elevator Love Letter": this decade's "Bizarre Love Triangle"?

As far as I'm concerned it is. I'm currently in the process of making one of those mixes you hope will serve as a giant arrow made of flashing red lights in the shape of hearts pointing at you, and it includes both. The comparison for me comes from the sheer number of pleasurable sounds and the ability both have to make me want to dance the minute they come on.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 07:04 (twenty years ago)

i hope you get some tail

gear (gear), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Also, I have no problem YSI-ing if anyone's bored and wants a new obsession. Thread justification to appease the mod gods: isolated discussion of "Elevator Love Letter" without having to refer to it in the context of Heart or "Ageless Beauty." Or possibly, I have failed at becoming a functional member of the ILM community once again.

(ha ha, thanks gear)

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 07:09 (twenty years ago)

This song is just about perfect.

..., Tuesday, 28 February 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Okay, here's the fairly final tracklist of the mix:

1. The Jackson Five - I Want You Back
2. Stars - Elevator Love Letter
3. Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
4. The Kinks - Victoria (her name)
5. The Smiths - Ask
6. Annie - Me Plus One
7. My Morning Jacket - Wordless Chorus
8. David Bowie - Star
9. Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla
10. X - The World's A Mess, It's in My Kiss
11. M83 - Run Into Flowers
12. T.I. - Let Me Tell You Something
13. Bob Dylan - The Man in Me
14. Donovan - There Is a Mountain
15. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
16. Basement Jaxx - All I Know

I'm not trying to be super heavy-handed so a lot of these are on simply as great songs she mostly hasn't heard before. I think I might actually be a little too explicit with the T.I. and Basement Jaxx songs. Anyway, this is not meant to distract from the "Elevator Love Letter" love, only to further the discussion. Did I miss the mark with this mix? There's still time to fix it, so comments are welcome.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I just made a diagram of energy and meaning and emotional effect as I intend the last two, and I've switched the placing of two tracks, the ones by Donovan and X. It now looks like this:

The Jackson Five - I Want You Back
Stars - Elevator Love Letter
Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
Donovan - There Is a Mountain
The Kinks - Victoria (her name)
The Smiths - Ask
Annie - Me Plus One
My Morning Jacket - Wordless Chorus
X - The World's A Mess, It's in My Kiss
David Bowie - Star
Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla
M83 - Run Into Flowers
T.I. - Let Me Tell You Something
Bob Dylan - The Man in Me
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
Basement Jaxx - All I Know

It's a little electro-heavy at the end, but I think that's okay.

And apparently ILM is now my livejournal. Can I blame this on being awake at 5 AM? Yeah, I didn't think so.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:44 (twenty years ago)

"ask" might be pushing it

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki OTM

anyway, elevator love letter is a great mixtape song

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I agree. Try another Smiths song. Other than that, it's a big sloppy wet kiss of a mix tape.

And it is not much of stretch to posit that Elevator Love Letter is the new Bizarre Love Triangle. Such a great song.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Try another Smiths song

go with "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Nah, keep it uptempo - "Sheila Take A Bow", which doesn't get nearly the love it deserves.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

i suggest stop me if you think you've heard this one before for this mix.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Is It Really So Strange?

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

you're the one for me fatty

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

haha

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Really, Ask is the breaking point? I thought for sure it would be the T.I. song. Hmm, this is an unexpected kink. Can someone explain WHY Ask is such a bad move? Back to the lab for now, though.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Jess, is BLT still your favorite song?

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That looks like a fantastic mix to me.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

maelstrom, is Is It Really So Strange? actually less obvious than Ask? I just heard for the first time, and it's a great song, but surely not more subtle. I don't mind showing my hand occasionally, but this is a sticky situation (read: she has a boyfriend), so I need to keep the over-emoting to a very small percentage of the total.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

she has a boyfriend?

abort! lock thread!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Nooooooooo! C'mon, s1ocki, I'm not trying to pull a fast one. I am willing to put in the time here, to wait, to possibly be let down, etc. But this is one of those you meet that is just on a different level as far as chemistry/connection goes. I can't just let that slip. But yes, with this in mind, how do I touch up the mix?

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

*cough*ysi*cough*

jklvxc, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Though I shouldn't be doing this at the request of an unregistered user, here is "Elevator Love Letter." This is still LoveLine, though. Do not forget!

This song is like ten times better if you think of it as "Alligator Love Letter."

adam (adam), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:43 (twenty years ago)

It makes me happy that you post this on every thread about Stars and/or misunderstood lyrics in existence. This is not sarcastic.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Imagine how happy it makes me. I giggle girlishly every time I think about. Really.

StephenPatrick, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

thanx for the ysi, this song is now my corny indie fuxxx wimpo anthem of the moment.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:42 (twenty years ago)

"William, It Was Really Nothing"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

"Ask" = "c'mon, let's have a fling before the nuclear strike comes"
"William" = TRU LOVE, BRAH

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

xxpost to jim, "Look Up" is fuckin' great too, but I think ELL is more immediate, which of course doesn't mean better, but I think it's undeniable in the way I consider "Bizarre Love Triangle" to be.

I will report back on this William business. Right now it's between Ask, William, Stop Me If YOu Think...., Sheila, Is It REally So strange?

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:02 (twenty years ago)

ELL:bizarre love triangle::regret:look up

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

sort of

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

i just think smiths on a crush tape is kinda cheating somehow

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

so then isn't it exactly the kind of thing i want?

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

and if you had to play by my rules and choose a smiths song, which would it be, esp. of the already mentioned choices?

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

gimme a second to chew it over

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

put on the ramones - i remember you instead

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

but wait, that's like the opposite of an introductory convincing song!

maybe I Want You Around or I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, if I was feeling completely uninhibited (which I'm not)

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:41 (twenty years ago)

honestly, though, "Ask" is gonna be hard to displace, as the earnestness of the offer to be asked anything makes a very good case for it as more than just a pre-apocalypse song and also gets across what i think i'm going for.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

i hope her boyfriend punches you!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:47 (twenty years ago)

he's a nice guy, too, which makes it a bit worse. she told me he has a bit of a man crush on me, so i'm sure it would be more of a "this is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you" thing for him.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

xpost to jim again: I tried evaluating your analogy but realized the impossibility of this due to the fact that "Regret" is not on Substance (the only New Order CD I own).

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, after much debate and consultation, I have decided to leave "Ask" in and the tracklisting as it was when I posted it the second time. I hope this doesn't disappoint. As for the results, I will likely check back in later.

In other news, I just watched the ELL video, which was a bit of a letdown. Def. not as good as the Ageless Beauty video.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:46 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to get back to you so late. I listened to Ask and Is It Really So Strange and Ask is fine as a Smiths' song -- not that you need my permission of course.

Or how about...Talking Scarlet by Prefab Sprout? (jk)

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

dave i think you should reconsider and give the tape to her boyfriend instead!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

many many many xposts

yes it is

Ron E. Mexico, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

"Meat Is Murder."

Please, though, "Ask"? I guess I can't really hate on innocent doe-eyed love, but....wait, yes, I can. Don't put "Ask" on there for god's sake. Soft sell! Soft sell! Slide some dude-ish stuff in there, be a music dork about it. Have some tracks that will always bore her to tears, have something noisy and obnoxious, but for the love of god no "Ask." I'm barely allowing "I Want You Back." The whole thing, the whole project is a little too mushy and potentially creepy (although, whatever, I mean, you say there's a chemistry there or whatever) - she has a boyfriend for pete's sake... jeez... I mean, "Ask"? "Ask"?

Maybe the problem is less that you're giving a non-single girl a twee "love me!" mixtape (which, in fact, I sort of support as the sort of thing I would do and have done), but the fact that I've pretty much always hated "Ask," for no single reason that I can put my finger on. Maybe I hate fun.

As far as mishearing songs and putting alligators in them goes, I'm going to lobby for my mishearing Pete Seeger's rendition of "Erie Canal" - "If you've ever navigated on the Erie Canal" -> "If you've had an alligator on the Erie Canal."

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

haha, s1ocki, maybe he'll discover it anyway and fall even harder for me in a non hetero way. xpost.

Doc, I feel you. I happen to really like "Ask" though, since I first heard it. I mean, there's no doubt that this mixtape is twee as fuck, but they're all songs that I fuckin' love. Plus, isn't the dude-ish/music dork stuff for her to find out later. Like, I don't want to put a bunch of fucking Slayer and Ornette on there (although Anthrax's "Indians," maybe) 'cause not only would I not really enjoy a mix with all Slayer/Ornette songs ("The Shape of Blood to Come"), but this is about my ability to introduce her to music that will tickle her fancy. Basically, I'm trying to say, "Hey, I think you're pretty great, and I care about you," not "Hey, be with me 'cause, look, I'm fuckin' awesome!" Twee for sure. Misguided, hopefully less so.

Also, I think some of the creepiness might be taken away by the fact that this mix is being made under the pretense of taking her mind off of the MRI she got today because of the horrible neck/back pain she's been having. So it's not entirely uncalled for.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Such a great song.

Also, did you attempt the girl friend heist? Did she get the Mix Cd or is it sitting on a shelf somewhere? These things intrigue me on a wasted Friday night.

Cunga, Saturday, 29 August 2009 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

Hell yes. An underrated classic. I've got to listen to it again, b/c it has been a while - it never failed to give me the sugar rush/chills-down-spine at the intro & by the time the vocals kick in, forget about it. It's over

All of the top ______ singles of the decade talk that has been going on lately has had me thinking a bit about what my own list would include, & this would def figure somewhere near the top, right alongside International Player's Anthem & Digital Love.
