is the best old song i've heard this year so far. check those hysterically impassioned vocals! what a fantastic opening line!
hear those ridiculous harmonies? the lyrics appear to make something close to no actual sense the first 10 times you hear them despite being clear enough.

bob stanley tells us that "It s hard to tell if it s tongue-in-cheek or just a little unhinged. The clever money's on both..."
yes.

the song seems to provoke/induce reactions as hysterical as the shrieks on the actual tune.

won't someone PLEASE sample that bit that goes "dance dance dance dance dance-dance-dance.." for something?

what must it have been like to hear this record in 1963 pre
TWIST AND SHOUT or whatever?

this song is totally goddamn brilliant, and definitely my favorite track from the new rhino box.

OTM all over the place, this song is unbelievably great. For a while now I've been kicking around the idea of getting that Rhino box just for the sake of supporting them putting this out on something. So so so wonderful. "Shimmy shimmy shimmy shy yi yippy dip!"

the lulu one is great too! and peanut duck.

there has already been one or more threads on this box set ...

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

this song deserves its own thread, though.

Redd Sherlock (Ken L), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

According to the box notes there are two more Tammys 45's! Anybody heard them? Or the B-side?

I guess what I'm asking is,

are the other singles as good?

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

haha, Piscesboy demanded we listen to this in the car about a dozen times during our trip to London the other week. It is great but I've just discovered Yvonne Carroll's 'Mister Loveman' (from the same boxset) and that's lovely. Imagine a cutesier Shirelles covering 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', speeding it up and and chucking in a bunch more hooks. I love it. Last month, I would play this song about ten times in a row each morning on the way to work, and I'd be humming the song all day, smiling like a madman. SO...INCREDIBLE...

Ernest P. (ernestp), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

this song is incredible. i vote for genuinely unhinged. the sheer force of it all, and the screeching! this song never fails to make me incredibly happy. ernest p. OTM! i've been thinking of the rush from bridge back to chorus in meetings and grinning uncontrollably as a result.

'peanut duck' is another remarkable one. "*quack quack* peanut duck!" i like the diane renay songs too. 'navy blue'; and 'kiss me sailor'. the toys' 'may my heart be cast into stone' and the palisades' 'make the night just a little longer' are my favourites over all.

is this the 'one kiss leads to another' box that we're discussing?

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Derrick, yeah it's that one. I really can't think of another Girl Group boxset that compares. Does anyone have any other Tammys track? If so, please please please YSI to this (or the offical YSI) thread.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 2 March 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

RPM did a whole compilation of Lou Christy and the Tammys, I think it's still available. It's fantastic.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

wow...just listened to this twelve times in a row. why can't everything sound like that?
and it wasn't enough so i put "grass" by animal collective on.
