Hubba hubba.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Only question is, to go to Aphex or not? Could be a set of unbridled brilliance or a twatty load of annoying shit, which will be received rapturously in either case because the place will be stowed with haircut-indie scenesters just there to be able to say they were.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

looks like a great collection of talent this year.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I've already booked my tickets for these

28/04/2006 Sun Ra Arkestra / Fire Engines / Bricolage / Future Pilot aka DJ Set The Liquidroom, Edinburgh
30/04/2006 Magnetophone featuring Sonic Boom and Kwaing Creasite / Schneider TM / Blindfold Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh

28/4/2006 Kieran Hebden (Fourtet) & Steve Reid / Battles / Carl Craig,The Venue, Edinburgh

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:41 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't excite me half as much as last year's lineup, but that could be because I'm jaded or out-of-touch and don't know about the less well-known names. Recommend something that isn't the 1990's!

Betty Lavette is kind of exciting, though I've heard mixed things about her comeback album from last year. When I say mixed things, the one printed review I read was lukewarm, but looking now at the Amazon customer reviews, they're all 5 star. I will CHECK IT OUT for myself.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

The 1990s. ug.

looking most fwd to:

akron/family
alexander tucker
silver jews
odetta
buck 65
the fire engines
hookers green no. 1

and must of course research a bunch of the names i don't know!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:09 (twenty years ago)

The silver jews are about 10 years too late for me.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:20 (twenty years ago)

The 1990s. ug.

Just to make it clear, I don't like the 1990's. I've never actually heard them and keep hearing their name being mentioned as a buzzy thing and that's why I said not to recommend them please. I assume they are bad, to be honest.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

HOT FEET

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

xpost

the only buzz you are hearing is because Rough Trade has signed them and is hopefully already regretting it.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

ok, that was mean.

1990s: best of luck to you! but i do not think you are a good band.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

are you a good band?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

certainly not. i am incompetent at almost everything in life.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Many of the bands listed aren't playing Glasgow.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

The 1990s are just one of those band that emerges from some other scene band that only about 12 people care about (Yummy fur, Pro-Forma, whatever) and somehow get some sort of buzz about them and get signed aren't they?

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

that assumes that people ought to care about Pro-Forma. (whoa! ted leo's brother's in it! omg!)

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Odetta!!!

That was a fun launch last night. My initial reaction when I saw Odetta listed was one of awe.
The film programme is excellent this year. Can't wait to see the Mingus and Roky Erikson docs.

The 1990s are fun, but they're no Yummy Fur. A wonky pop take on Stonesy rock.

stew!, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I just booked tickets for Belle and Sebastian's day. Twee is me! The other things I think I want to see appear to all be in Edinburgh (i.e. the first two things that Leigh is going to)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Many of the bands listed aren't playing Glasgow.

yup, sorry about that. thread title should read (glasgow, edinburgh, aberdeen)

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

ach, stir, everybody down south knows that they're all just a stone throw away from each other . . .*

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

ACR! at optimo! get the fuck in.

i think i'll do two nights in edinburgh, two in glasgow. maybe.

i think this line-up is superb.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this looks fucking great. i would be most down for:

a certain ratio
aphex twin
carl craig
fire engines
jackson
dj pierre
optimo
roxanne shante
wolf eyes

sadly it's the same weekend as the EMP pop music conference in seattle...dammit!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

oh and vashti!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 23:10 (twenty years ago)

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I would have liked to have seen Tarwater but i've already got 2 gigs that night, one of which is on at the same time.

Why did i buy tickets for the Sun Ra Arkestra and Keiran Hebden and Steve Reid?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

that was silly. give them to me.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not going to see anything, it's all too expensive. i guess i'd like to see Silver Jews. i'm going to see Low on tuesday when Triptych is al over.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

villalobos and luciano and vitalic live (!!!) at pressure

Thanks. I can't fucking wait.

I'm having to give this a miss, got a funeral to go to tomorrow at 9am. Sweet Ricardo :(

Going to see Aphex on Sunday, but only because my mate couldn't make it and is selling a ticket to me for a discounted price.

jimnaseum wastes the taxpayer's money, Friday, 28 April 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

Silver Jews in Edinburgh last night was an utter joy. Akron/Family on Wednesday were fantastic too!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

hi hi ricardo!!

and the weather is so... lovely

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 28 April 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

dislocated my knee again

bang go s jews, villalobos etc and a certain ratio

: (

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 April 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

so far, akron/family, james blood ulmer and the balanescu quartet have all blown my mind. i'm not sure if i have enough mind left for the rest of the weekend.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 28 April 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

hey stirmonster please organise an optimo night with akron/family in edinburgh please. i promise i will go.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

after this weekend we have one more optimo in edinburgh before the venue shuts down. i certainly hope to put them on in glasgow some time though so i guess you'll just have to scoot down the m8. the west is the best.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

...and before i get accused of starting that age old glasgow vs. edinburgh thang again, i have spent exactly half my life in edinburgh and exactly half in glasgow.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

the only trouble with glasgow is that it's not where i live!

also RIP The Venue :(

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

the only trouble with glasgow is that it's not where i live!

45 minutes.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

what i mean to say is that there are regular posters on ILM from all over the globe who would LOVE to be able to come to optimo but you're actually within spitting distance so you have no excuse!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

jed, i am not making excuses not to go to Glasgow - I am explaining why I requested that my said dream event be held in Edinburgh.

C'est tout. I will be in Glasgow for gigs on Sunday, next Friday and the following Friday - so it's not that I'm spooked by the distance.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

i love edinburgh actually but i've been to venue optimo's and they ain't really optimo anyway, it's just nowhere near as good. i'd guess that stirmonster agrees?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

i agree. optimo is really only optimo on a sunday. saying that, the edinburgh crowd do seem to have 'got it' a bit more the last couple of times we've done it but i have a feeling that if i played 'kiss me again' they'd be heading for the exits.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's partly also to do weith the fact that there is somewhere to exit to, it being 2 rooms, which kinda splits up the event and loses the intensity of the small sweaty box that is the sub club.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

Will be at Tramway tomorrow and Optimo Sunday night. So who says Edinburgers don't make it through to Glasgow?

alext (alext), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

had a rigmarolle of a villalobos experience

no triptych for me, sadly

GF is working at tramway tonight & sunday though

moretimo, since I have no excuse now : /

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 29 April 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Belanescu Quartet + Max Richter were really unspecial.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Saturday, 29 April 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Akron/Family were mind blowing at the Tramway. Like the best psych-folk noise jam band evah!
James Blood Ulmer was great too. Took me a while to get into it but I was gripped for the last half: "Won't be no foreplay, til you sign on the dotted line!" :)
Silver Jews last night were fantastic. The gig flew by and we met Steve West at the end. Although if I'd hung around longer I coulda met the whole band and come over all awkward teenager like before the lovely Cassie Berman.
I then went on to Biz Markie who was a bit disappointing. What is it with hip-hop shows that the performers can never hear what's going on in their monitors? The grumpy cries of "turn my monitor up" made the less feel good that it should have been. It was a decent enough show, but there were no surprises. The DJ dropped a beat, Biz and Roxanne Shante did their thing, Biz would do a bit of beatboxing between tunes and that was it. No spontaneity really, and not enough fun.

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 29 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

blows my mind that balanescu quartet could be unspecial.

acr last night were great. i think i was one of the youngest people there. roll on tonight where i will be one of the oldest people there!

imo, the best triptych so far. james blood ulmer and akron/family's performances will stay with me for a long, long time.

i need to start lobbying for einsturzende neubauten for next year.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 30 April 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

should I go to optimo?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Is anyone else going to Bettye Lavette?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

I am texting al c.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

That's not quite the same.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

: (

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Bettye Lavette in Edinburgh last night was an amazing voice, and so youthful and energetic, but uh the genre kind of left things to be desired. I guess I'm not funky enough.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Sunday, 30 April 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Tape and The Concretes last night. I can't say that I was hugely impressed by either act. I didn't even realise it was part of Triptych until I got into The Venue. Mind you I didn't even realise that Triptych had started...
