Overlooked (these days) genre which simply has all the happy-inducing things I like. Electro sounds, diva vocals, snappy hi-nrg snares. Whoo!

stirmonster, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Freestyle is one of my fave genres as it was some of the only "dance" music played consistently on L.A. radio as I was growing up. The lyrics/vocals can be really cheesy, but there are some awesome productions if you can make it past things like "I'm fascinated by your love boy, and I'm fascinated by your love toy".

There's a series in the US called 'Freestyle Explosion'. Volume 1 (of 6 so far) has among others:

Nice 'n' Wild - "Diamond Girl"
the aforementioned Company B - "Fascinated"
and TKA - "One Way Love"

also seek Corina - "Loving You Like Crazy"
Pet Shop Boys - "Domino Dancing" (album/extended version)

Some great albums (more or less chronological):

Two Sisters Two Sisters (Sugarscoop)
Trinere Trinere (Jampacked)
Cover Girls Show Me (Fever)
Expose' Exposure (Arista)
Company B Gotta Dance (Atlantic)
Pajama Party Up All Night (Atlantic)

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 August 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Also:

Sweet Sensation Take It While It's Hot (Atco)

On the peripherary (but hey, if you're gonna count the Pet Shop Boys): Shannon, Miami Sound Machine, Real Roxanne, Lisa M.

More sad boys to match the tough girls: Noel, Coro, Willie and Gil, Timmy T.

xhuxk, Sunday, 10 August 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

just about everything by CONNIE is great. She's at the top of my list. I also like SEQUAL. stuff on Joey Boy is generally good. anything with Pretty Tony production is generally worth checking out.

Latinos down here in Texas go crazy for this stuff. I've been meaning to check out one of those freestyle revival tours for awhile now.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

Nocera's "Summertime, Summertime" is a killer as well. With freestyle, it's really all about bad vocals delivered with the utmost conviction.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

Cool, that sounds like plenty to get me started. So far everything I'm hearing is perfect.

Jeez, do any of you amazing people have Nocera's "Summertime, Summertime" at an audio quality higher than 128? I love this track but being forced to listen to this tinny, thin sound is ruining my life.

scott seward, Friday, 23 April 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

another great tape to be made would be "Oh, Oh, Freestyle Goes Acid". cuz by the late 80's lots of freestyle singles were including acid remixes and i love those. my mix is pretty trad though. which is why i didn't put any hip-house remixes on my tape either. hip-house and acid were the future - or the now sound at the turn of the 80's - but the swift edits and killer drum programming of classic freestyle is where my heart lies.

scott seward, Friday, 23 April 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

ok THIS right here is the genre i really really want to get into and find out more about. mp3s, zips and/or recommendations of buyable compilations would be MUCH APPRECIATED. (pref not youtubes tho.)

Rocking that list right now!

Alfred, I’m very curious about your thoughts on a South African song that’s part of this little poll I organized the other day. I mentioned there how it somehow reminded me of Latin Freestyle (it must be in the air!)

(Nayobe’s “Please Don’t Go” features twice on your list btw)

4. India, "Dancing on the Fire" (1988)
Today, India is best known as a salsa singer; she won a Latin Grammy for her album Intensamente con Canciones de Juan Gabriel in 2016. However, her 1990 debut solo record, Breaking Night, is the link between freestyle and house with production from Jellybean Benitez, "Little" Louie Vega and Mantronik. The standout cut from the album is the Benitez-produced "Dancing on the Fire" with its dramatic synth lines and India's intense vocal workout. Originally released as a single in 1988, "Dancing on the Fire" is pretty late in the game for freestyle, which began to wane at the start of the ’90s, and the singer isn't all that well-known for her work in this area. Outside of her salsa records, India is widely recognized in the house music world, particularly for the now-classic Masters at Work track "I Can't Get No Sleep."

curmudgeon, Saturday, 16 February 2019 13:04 (six years ago)

Alfred, did you get a chance to check out that song? I’m still curious what you think!

There are definitely some familiar tracks on this forthcoming comp, but it looks cool and I'm glad Ace put it together (I will buy it for sure): https://acerecords.co.uk/latin-freestyle-new-york-miami-1983-1992

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Thursday, 3 August 2023 21:57 (two years ago)

It’s good (50% classics) but it also reflects some particuiar personal tastes that I don’t share. This is one of the few times when I think I would be a better compiler than Bob Stanley. But I don’t see how he could have come up with any obscure-but-great freestyle record that I haven’t already heard. I followed the genre closely through its entire lifespan, mostly by listening to WPOW Power 96 out of Miami.

Josefa, Friday, 4 August 2023 03:14 (two years ago)

Josefa, could you hit us with a personal top 10 or so freestyle tracks? I'm pretty much a neophyte, but I love this sound so much and have been trying to dig deeper

J. Sam, Friday, 4 August 2023 17:51 (two years ago)

Sure, here are some favorites that are not on the Bob Stanley/Ace Records compilation:

Amoretto - Clave Rocks
Cynthia & Johnny O - Dreamboy/Dreamgirl
Natasha - Be Gentle with My Heart
Nayobe - Please Don't Go
Nice N' Wild - Diamond Girl
Nocera - Summertime, Summertime
Sa-Fire - Let Me Be the One
Sequal - It's Not Too Late
Shannon - Let the Music Play
Shy Rose - I Cry for You (this is actually Italian but was played to death on the Miami freestyle station)
Sweet Sensation - Hooked on You
Judy Torres - No Reason to Cry
Trinere - All Night

Josefa, Friday, 4 August 2023 18:17 (two years ago)

I've always liked this comp CD (although I guess it's been out of print a while).

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Friday, 4 August 2023 18:20 (two years ago)

..from that, I also love "(You Are My) All and All" by Joyce Sims. And Erotic Exotic, I'd almost forgotten about them. They were a Miami group I saw live back in the day.

Not really sure what Two of Hearts is doing on a freestyle compilation but still it's a great track listing.

There simply aren’t many freestyle acts who weren’t from either New York or Miami, and the ones that weren’t were only tangentially freestyle-related such as Stacey Q (LA), Information Society (Minneapolis), or Nu Shooz (Portland)

Josefa, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 20:46 (two years ago)

The one “dud” act at the Freestyle Festival I attended a few weeks back was (unfortunately) from here in L.A. – but he’s not really a freestyle artist anyway: Egyptian Lover.

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 20:58 (two years ago)

(he suuuuucked)

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 20:58 (two years ago)

Egyptian Lover was clearly electro but I think he did have a big influence on freestyle too. After all, freestyle was spawned from electro. Countless freestyle records utilize the Kraftwerk “Numbers” beat in the same way Afrika Bambaataa used it in “Planet Rock”

Josefa, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 21:28 (two years ago)

I'm not a stickler for genre. "Two of Hearts" belongs on a freestyle comp. Heard it blast for months in summer and fall '86 on WPOW 96.5 Miami around the harder freestyle stuff.
