Back in my day, when DJs actually announced what record they had played, they pronounced it Stay-ton.

I generally hear American DJs pronounce it like "Statin' for the record" and British DJs pronounce it like "Staten Island."

i've always pronounced it like staten island, but i don't think i've ever heard anyone say it aloud.

I've heard it pronounced plenty of times, always as "Stayton." But that doesn't mean that that's correct, since none of the people who said it actually knew her.

I've always gone with Stayton too, probably because I was at school with a guy with the same surname and that's how he pronounced it.

I will try to get answer to this burning question. I've always said it with a long "a." I am supposed to write something about her new record, produced in Nashville by Mark Nevers, sometime soon. I hope to talk to her. It's a really good record, too--in my book far better than most of the soul-revivalist shit I've heard over the last few years, really cleanly performed. I've been listening to her disco-era stuff, and to the self-titled Fame record she did in 'Bama back in the early '70s. she strikes me as a bit too male-identified, a little lacking in the tough-minded quality you get from Laura Lee or LaVette, but it's still pretty fine.

six years pass...

I just watched the Disco double-length episode of Unsung on TVOne last night. It's "Stay-ton".

Also, I want to thank that show for shining a whole new light on "Young Hearts Run Free" for me. I never realized the circumstances surrounding that song with regard to her irl struggles, which makes it mean a hell of a lot more.
