Yeah, we don't have to pay VAT. Agreed for the most part- the two times I've dealt with them, their prices were great, everything was in stock, and it arrived faster than I would expect a domestic order from Othermusic or Forced Exposure. Now if only the dollar wasn't so weak right now. Sigh.

Oh, and the audio samples did indeed suck- they're ten seconds of 64kbps mp3 or something ridiculous like that, yes?

telephone thing, Thursday, 2 March 2006 07:19 (nineteen years ago)

more like 30 seconds... but its like, c'mon- how are you gonna write a review about how radical this fourteen minute lindstrom remix is and then let me hear half a minute of it as proof?

still- great service, amazing selection, and pretty good reviews on most stuff.

Boomkat are better...

The best place on t'internet to buy vinyl...

good selection, plus the website is linked to stock ( thanks for nothing rough trade), and their very helpful if you phone them.

the small audio samples is probably more to do with the fact that thers not enough hours in the day to do full dubs and the shorter the sample the more it leaves you wanting more.

so more sales.

flexx.be could benefit from this as well if i'm not mistaken.

as far as the states are concerned, turntablelab.com is my favorite for vinyl (great sound clips and reviews), with foced exposure and calsound coming in 2nd and 3rd.

Do any of you people actually live in Manchester and have any of you ever been to Piccadilly Records? It just seems a bit weird that there's a thread on I Love Music that relates to a shop that I've been going to for about the last twelve years. It's even weirder that the thread seems to be purely talking about Piccadilly Records as a solely internet-based concern. The guys who work there tend to vary between your typical indie music shop clerk arsehole and actually quite nice guys. Also, you can't go to a gig or a club in Manchester without seeing one of them. They haunt me! I try to always buy my records from there, even though they're probably the dearest shop in town.

My, this has been a bit of a fractured ramble.

I live in the states and have never been to Manchester.

please note the thread's title.

I live in Manchester and I have been to Piccadilly records. I am not one of the original posters so your question was not directed at me, but I wish to share in your reaction.

Weird!

No need to be sarky, Grady. I didn't mean any offence by my post and I certainly didn't mean to come across as ignorant, I merely meant that I think of Piccadilly Records as a shop, not a webstore, and I just found it a little weird that a shop that's been a part of my life and to which I've given a lot of money over the years was being discussed in such a manner on the 'net. It's cool for them that they're so wide-reaching these days with the webstore as there was talk of them closing down a few years back because of money constraints and the increasing rent in the redeveloped Northern Quarter area of Manchester. Long may they reign. I think that Piccadilly Records have had a hand in increasing the profile of the likes of The DFA, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas and the Fence Collective in Manchester, the UK and indeed the world in the last few years.

Again, I didn't mean to come across as arsey and I apologise for doing so. Also, thanks Zora for backing me up.

yer mam!, Saturday, 4 March 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't see yer mam's post as ignorant. It must be a pleasant surprise to find your favorite record shop spreading its wings, so to speak. They have a lot of rare stuff and I'm anxious to order from them.

sorry to come off as sarky. my apologies.

i understand what you meant now: i guess i was only looking at it as an on-line entity and not even considering the fact that plenty of ILMers may shop there in person. but i think its a pretty good on-line shop at that (with the obvious complaint stated in the thread's title.)

i live in chicago, which has pretty decent record stores, but still find the need to get new vinyl from overseas from time to time- especially when Piccadilly makes it so easy.

and i'm interested to learn more about Piccadilly's history and its role in its community. i think i read on thier site that james murphy first heard about Lindstrom in thier shop- which is cool to think about since DFA have twice since called upon his services.

You mean changing from one to the other every 5 minutes? I do that.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

That's okay Grady. James Murphy did indeed hear about Lindstrom in Piccadilly Records last Feb while doing an instore. Personally, James Murphy is a bit of a hero of mine and I clearly remember going in Piccadilly and buying 'Losing My Edge' on 12" vinyl for £7.50 the day after hearing the DJ (ex-Club Suicide man and NME journo, Tony Naylor) playing it after The Rapture's first ever gig in Manchester at the Night & Day, which is coincidentally just across the road from Piccadilly. So, yeah, Piccadilly does have a place in my heart forever.

I'd be happy to tell you anything you'd like to know about the place, if I can, so feel free to fire some questions at me.

Yes, Ronan, I do that too.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

Looking over the site I see they have some Cosmic Jokers. Nice!

How long does it take to ship to the US again?

Jeff K (jeff k), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

usually within a week.

grady (grady), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

I remember going in Picadilly back when it used to be in that other place (near the arndale), before it was in the place it's in now (near er, eastern bloc and vinyl exchange, assuming they haven't moved too). But I used to buy more stuff from...ah, what was it called? The place down near the cornerhouse, which was in a basement behind a building site and had lots of remaindered stock, so was cheaper? Short Cuts or something.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Power Cuts, JimD. They sold records with a bit cut out of the sleeve, didn't they? Jesus, that takes me back. Piccadilly used to be on Brown St. by the way.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think record shopping is the thing I miss most about Manchester :(

last post ever (fandango), Sunday, 5 March 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Come back then. I'm sure you'll be welcome.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Sunday, 5 March 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Power cuts! Yeah, of course.

I miss record shopping in manchester too. But then I miss record shopping in general, since I stopped buying records.
