Aztec Camera for a more dynamic song. (Plz no jokes about how the song may be dynamic but the thread topic is not.)

Aztec Camera - "Oblivious"

... something more sincere about this track. i dunno. maybe it was the Haircut 100 thing I saw on VH1 that makes them seem sooooo lame.

Aztec Camera.

oblivious makes me wanna cry. same with walk out to winter. ah youth. i remember how jealous i was when i brother told me he was gonna go see elvis costello and aztec camera were opening. i didn't care a bit about elvis. haircut 100 don't mke me wanna cry even though they bring the nostalgia for me as well.

sorry, Oblivious!

"Love Plus One" is good, but "Oblivious" is one of the greatest songs of the 80s.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 3 March 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

Aztec Camera.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 March 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Just Like Gold" > "Love Plus One" > "Oblivious" (just barely!)

And, I just felt like talking about "Just Like Gold".

San Carlos, Friday, 3 March 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer "somewhere in my heart".

hick neyward, Friday, 3 March 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 3 March 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

(Actually it is shit as well.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 3 March 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, "Oblivious" wins this one hands down but like others "Love Plus One" is great.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 3 March 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

I never liked Oblivious half as much as Walk Out..., having been blown away by the latter so it's hard to say.

What would happen if we threw Care's Flaming Sword into the equation?

Jez (Jez), Friday, 3 March 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Love Plus One. I prefer earlier Aztec Camera, and "Where does it go from here, is it down to the lake I fear" has been stuck somewhere near the forefront of my consciousness for nearly 25 years. Which has to count for something.

(There's a track on the Arctic Monkeys album which reminds me of the strummed riff from Oblivious, but it isn't anywhere to hand.)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 3 March 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the Love Plus One 7" when It was out(maybe I was about 9 year old? What year was it out?), so they win for me.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 3 March 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Both songs are so warm/fuzzy, but Oblivious wins because of Roddy's muso jazz chords and the Django-fied solo.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oblivious. Love Plus One sounded great at the time but when I hear it now I don't know why.

Bimble The Nimble (Bimble...), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Never heard "Love Plus One" but I dig that Aztec Camera tune.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Haircut for that awesomoe intro. Both are great.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Love Plus One. I prefer earlier Aztec Camera

Yeah, by that fourth single, from their yet-to-be-released debut album, they'd really lost it.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 3 March 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Oblivious". One of the best songs ever written is a tough match for that rather ordinary band. Nick Heyward was a lot better as a solo act.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 March 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Regarding Roddy Frame one of the reasons why he has never managed to top the early Aztec Camera material is that his voice sounded better when he was still a kid more or less. He quickly lost the boyishness of those early recordings, and while his considerably more mature voice may be more skilled, it still lacks the charm of the early days. (Plus, obviously, he doesn't write songs like "Oblivious", "Walk Out To Winter", "We Could Send Letters", "The Bugle Calls Again", "Pillar To Post" or "This Boy Wonders" anymore anyway).

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 March 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

no contest - haircut is bubblegum, high land hard rain is genius from start to finish, although down the dip is the highlight for me

dr x o'skeleton, Monday, 6 March 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Good god, Geir is OTM!

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 March 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have been listening to the Aztec Camera song recently.

I was struck by the line, 'They say we're lonely but we're really just alone'.

They are not really quite my thing but I can admire lead guitar playing.

best Aztec Camera album = the Ryuichi Sakamoto-produced Dreamland

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 6 March 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

"love plus one" is one of the greatest singles of all time. "oblivious" is aztec camera for the bigger audience, that's not the best single they ever put out. it's great, but certainly not the better song-wise! the chorus on love plus one is just balls-deep pop craftery. i think it's easy for people to get burned out on haircut 100 because they associate them with being on every one hit wonder of the 80s cd ever. but that's not to diminish the fact that they surpassed their idols orange juice in a major way for one shining moment in "love plus one".

I would still say they (he) never topped "High Land Hard Rain", but that one was closer than anything else before or since.
