If this has been done I couldn't find it...they achieved the honor today of being my first indie rock (or any rock) purchase in quite a number of months.

Mission: Control! is a fucking great title for a rock n' roll album.

Yeah, Mission: Control is a catchy joyride that never lets up. A nice (and necessary) shift from the Jawbox, two guitar dynamic. Somebody who compared its appeal to old XTC really captured it. Their 2nd album was a letdown, although I never gave it a fair hearing.

They rock, are good live, are nice people, and put out at least one GREAT record (only listened to Identikit once or twice and got bored--that was during my 100%-stoned psychedelia phase so I will try again tonight) and have impressive pedigree: Jawbox and Government Issue, very cool.

When the "Carnival" 7" came out I listened to it over and over again, enjoying the shit out of it every time, "Scissoring" (the B-side) too... good, good stuff. Neat white vinyl too.

adam, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All that means classic, yeah.

I second the CARNIVAL recommendation.....hype shit.....and THE SURGEONS HOUSE has the most perfectly scraggly guitar line ever played.....beautiful song......it warms me up like no other....well, maybe like when I used to microwave my "Magic Bag" therapeutic pad, stick it between my legs and watch Ducktales in the morning before fucking school.....I was one of those kids that couldn't eat a single bite in the morning, not a one......I was a weak AM student but I persevered......in high school I could force a pizza pop in the AMs but only if I had been smoking pot the night before......oh, the Magic Bag I first encountered at Grandma's house, and I had to have one for myself. I tried hers and it smelled like cabbage and ginger snaps.....dirty ass bitch.

After living with the first Burning Airlines for a few days, I wuv it. Definitely a perfect mix of arty and ROCK.

Meccano is definitely my favorite song, though no one seems to mention it in reviews. Flood of Foreign Capitol and 3 Sisters are close, and they're all pretty great.

My listening pleasure was a bit spoiled on the first listen when my roommate walked in and said, "Hey, is that the singer from Bush?"

Jordan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't know if i'm the person curt mentions above, but here's my (old) take on it.

jess, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe Kel-Man has also said something like 'XTC on steroids'.

Mission: Control is one of my most favorite albums of say the last five years ago. Identikit I've come to enjoy but that's all.

Josh, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, the XTC + steroids line was the one, but Jess' review nails it, too. Hey, wouldn't it be awesome if XTC actually took steroids and wound up sounding just like BA?

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah because then I would like XTC and there would be twice as many bands making albums that sounded like that.

Josh, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mission: Control! has re-writes of "Living Through Another Cuba," "Helicopter," "Meccanic Dancing," "Are You Receiving Me," "Generals and Majors," "Limelight," etc etc xtc, but it still sounds like something made by Robbins, Barbot, etc. If more indie rock bands would have emulated early XTC -- instead of copying Swell Maps and Mission of Burma and losing both bands' er enthusiasm/spirit -- I would've liked a lot more of it.

Haha, this thread is OLD.

So has anyone heard the Channels EP? Is it good? Daver (since I didn't know about them until your link on Jess' blog)?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard the one track - it sounds OK, from what I remember.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

It's good.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I just ordered it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

this thread reminds me that my BA folder was on the hard drive that died, which is why I haven't heard "Carnival" in waaay too long

Anyone know what’s going on with the vinyl reissues of Mission: Control! and Identikit? The label doing them says it’s still taking pre-orders but the release date was 8 March? And no update? I get it, vinyl = delays, but no feedback reads as fishy to me.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Monday, 30 March 2026 18:51 (five days ago)

I was going to order them and Glad I didn't then and will wait and see if someone stocks them here.

King GrimSon (Pfunkboy of ILX), Monday, 30 March 2026 19:22 (five days ago)

Don't know that label - 30 something
