Adieu Serge

I was in Paris on this day in 1991 when the word got out that Gainsbourg was dead. It was a very strange day, people lamenting outside his home, people trying to score political points, a great sense of loss. I was just thinking about this and thought I'd start a somewhat pointless, but appreciative, thread.

Shame on me and all my family for not being a Serge fan at the time he died. But maybe that was a common thing for french teenagers in the late 80's and early 90's, when Gainsbarre was far more famous than Gainsbourg.
It took my best friend to lend me "Melody Nelson" and "L'Homme à la Tête de Chou" to start to get it. And then I became obsessed.
But still, shame on me.

That explains the Serge Gainsbourg retrospective I half watched on TV5 last night.

That 2DVD set is very awesome, lots of great interviews with Serge talking Shoppenhauer, China and ye ye. He says a lot of absolutley indefensible things but still comes out entirely likeable, but then that's Gainsbourg for you innit.

There's a 3DVD Brel set with a similiar design (but in orange), looks very spiffy stacked next to it. Also good for compare/contrast: Brel the ultra-dramatic hothead, Gainsbourg impeccably chilled in a Bond villain stylee.

Also, when I last visited Paris I got this comic album, "Polars Polaires", featuring various comic book artist's takes on Gainsbourg songs. It's nice.

He lived and died at 5bis rue de Verneuil, between Saint-Peres and the Rue de Beaune.

It has long been a kind of pilgrimage destination and the wall facing the street iscovered in graffiti.

Here's an interesting site about the wall in front of his hôtel particulier (in French):

Didn't the wall get painted over?

(I suppose that is all explained if I read the site)

When I was in Paris for school, I dragged one of my classmates to it.
