(1) MRI - Rhythmogenesis, or
(2) Yagya - The Rhythm of Snow, or
(3) Andrew Weatherall - Hypercity, or
(4) Markus Guentner - In Moll, or
(5) Vainqueuer - Elevations? I am kind of broke right now, and so I can only afford one. Which one should it be? Why? Thanks, and sorry for being selfish.

Feel free to make other suggestions in this general vein...

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fatboy slim - better living through chemistry

ethan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ahh, Fatboy Slim... I'll refuse to slam him, as I don't know that I've ever heard more from him than that damn annoying single with the video.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've heard good things about the Markus Guentner one.

geeta, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His tracks on Pop Ambient are gorgeous, I'd say.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But is his album all pretty much beatless ambient? Not that I'm not down with that, it's just that I have a lot of it, and I really love the more crunchy house tracks on those Kompakt comps, too.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's that Andrew Weatherall mix like anyway? Who's heard it? Is it just like another Microhouse thing?

mdieter, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jon Carter/Junior Cartier Live 7 Mix. Funky dirty house all the way.

Failing that maybe Felix Da Housecat if you don't have it already? "Kittenz and Thee Glitz". Like Daft Punk only more dark then camp. (sometimes). Also it's got a good smattering of funky techno.

Ronan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Vainqueuer alb is wonderful - tho' there's a lot of 'beatless ambience' and not much in the way of crunchy beats.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Hypercity comp - my fave album from last year and probably a good intro to the label. album

Robin, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would go with Hypercity (playing it right now actually). Although I'm intrigued by the title Rhythm of Snow .

Omar, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Hypercity. Rhythmogenesis is very good too but Hypercity is the one to start with. Vainquer is quite lovely of course but Hypercity has BEATZ.

Tim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FC Kahuna 'Machine Says Yes' on City Rockers is a really good one for a dance artist album.

Anna, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Money well spent regardless of what you choose.

Andy K, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only knock on your getting Hypercity is that it might contain too many cuts already familiar to you.

Curt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops! I was thinking of Nine O' Clock Drop. Never mind.

Curt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you're bored with Hypercity (not you, Clarke B.,) you could always get the Two Lone Swordsman albums... quite a bit messier than Hypercity, for obviously reasons, but sehr interessant.

Mickey Black Eyes, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get Heiko Laux - Liquidism

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I find Hypercity surprisingly unsatisfying. Something too...thick and puffy about it. It should push all my buttons, but usually it leaves me wanting to hear Herbert's Let's All Make Mistakes instead.

Andy, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

get some rock instead... the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' EP is pretty amazing and with a name like that how can u possibly go wrong? If you want a non-intrusive background music get a birdie and make it chirp, don't waste your money on electronica...

Simone, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Genres only have to pit themselves against other genres when they're dying.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And why is this stuff background music? Because there aren't any lyrics to pay attention to?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I tried to get that birdie and make it chirp, but it just shat on the floor and flew out the window. Cages are way too fucking expensive. Stick with the electronica CDs, Clarke.

charlie va, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you want something super-aggressive, get a brick and pound it against your head, don't waste your money on rock...

charlie va, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of what you've named, I'd grab the MRI. Stylistically solid as a rock, deep, well worked grooves and worth several spins imo. Hypercity is nice, but I think it scratches the surface of the stream which fully flows through Rhythmogensis. BTW, MRI have a new full length due in April, I believe. The Guentner is really nice as well. I have to post this or I'll qualify everything to death. -jeff

The button down mind of Daniel Bell mix album that came out on Tresor a couple of years ago. Pretty awesome mix of micro house, quirk house and minimal techno with a bit of Todd Edwards thrown in. Also Isolees' Rest is a fairly safe bet.

one month passes...
Try Herbert - Bodily Functions or Doctor Rockit - Indoor Fireworks

David Simpson, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarke B did you actually get any of the 5 you listed?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah! I picked up the Weatherall used, and it really is great. I find myself playing it a lot - it's very adaptable. I didn't get Rhythmogenesis, but I did pick up the new MRI based on an old thread somewhere (I think started by Andy K.), and it is quite possibly my favorite new thing I've picked up all year!

Also, I haven't heard Doctor Rockit, but the Herbert I really enjoy. There are a few of the straight-up jazzier tracks I could do without, but the tracks I like - esp. "Suddenly", "Leave Me Now", "Foreign Bodies", "The Audience" - I adore.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarke, get Secondhand Sounds - it's like two discs of the best bits of Bodily Functions but much broader in scope.

Also, Michael Mayer's Immer mix-cd on Kompakt makes the perfect companion to Hypercity.

Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I just read the thread on Secondhand Sounds yesterday and it piqued my interest - I'll be sure to check it out when I get the dough... ;-) I've been wondering to myself, too - what is so awesome about microhouse? I can't seem to get enough of it.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd just started a blog post on same issue - inspired by Andy B's complete that he was no longer sure what microhouse was 'about' anymore. Certainly there's an insanely high batting average that can't really be explained...
