"Those disco synthesizers,
those daily tranquilizers,
those body building prizes,
those bedroom alibis,
all this, but no surprises for this year's girl."

Are those right?!

That strangled scream-thing he does at the end is better than any of the lyrics.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

That "disco synthesizers" reference always intrigued me, presuming he was singing about something like "I Feel Love". How many songs of that sort even EXISTED in late 1977/early '78? Can't have been too many...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 3 March 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no he didn't.

Redd Scharlach (Ken L), Friday, 3 March 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

he went ahead and did

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

disco had loads of synthesizers before "I Feel Love," it just wasn't usually made up entirely of them

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

that's from his album When He Was Fucking Great

When He Was Good came out last year

Taylor, Saturday, 4 March 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

-- Matos-

Yeah, see, that's kinda exactly what I meant - lotsa synths in pre-Moroder disco, but mostly utilized as just one instrument in a mix. None prominent enough to completely monopolize a track the way "I Feel Love" did. Before that time, "disco synthesizers" would be about as unhelpful and unnecessary as "disco guitars".

Now, "disco basslines" or "disco strings": THOSE terms had some weight! We read those terms and know the exact sound. (That is, so long as we were born before, I dunno, 1985 maybe...)

"this year's model" is roughly contemporaneous w/ kraftwerk's man machine though, right? i really can't imagine EC being AT ALL into ralf und florian's music or schtick -- they're almost the anti-elvis costellos or something.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 4 March 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

which reminds me of THIS thread (created by yers truly):

taking sides (battle of the Kings of New Wave Dorks): elvis costello v. gary numan

From the liner notes of the reissue of Armed Forces:
"Our musical navigation came from the handful of albums about which we could all agree, records to which we listened with a disturbing and almost ritualistic frequency. These included Station to Station, Low, and "Heroes" by David Bowie-the effect of which can be heard overtly in the keyboard and background voices of "Moods For Moderns" and "Senior Service"-The Idiot and Lust For Life by Iggy Pop, Autobahn by Kraftwerk, and several early compilations by ABBA..."

Jouster (Jouster), Sunday, 5 March 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

that's actually fascinating, jouster. i'm actually glad to be proven wrong -- though i honestly can't detect much (if any) berlin-era bowie even in "moods for moderns" or "senior service." abd certainly no kraftwerk in ANYTHING EC has ever done.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 5 March 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)
