Joe Jackson in any case, that is.

Quip Lesto, Friday, 3 March 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Head Over Heels" sounds better all the time.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 March 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

TFF (partially because I am a fairly unrepetant Joe Jackson disdainer outside of a song or two, and that isn't one of them, but "Head Over Heels" was always great and I didn't need Donnie Darko for justification).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 March 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

I knew someone would bring up Donnie Darko sooner or later.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, interesting. The two are completely different. The Tears for Fears song is more anthemic, the Joe Jackson song more subtle. So I'd say - Tears For Fears, with the Joe Jackson song always a good candidate for mix tapes whose recipients have only heard his more popular tracks.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even remember "Head Over Heels" from Darko (although it makes sense). It's a great song, though. I've actually been listening to it a lot lately. I know I've heard the Joe Jackson song, but I can't place it right now.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

i knew the moment i heard it back when that "head over heels" would be one of my favorite songs forever. so far i was right.

not as familiar with joe jackson stuff, i'm sorry to say

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Jackson's first two albums, "Look Sharp!" and "I'm the Man," are flat-out great, unless you're of the "all Elvis Costello and Graham Parker suck" sort.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 3 March 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Like Solomon I was unable to decide between the greatness of "Everyone Wants To Know the World" and "Head Over Heels," so I cut them in half and (surpassing Solomon in inventiveness) spliced them together.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 March 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Different For Girls by far ... although I'm recollecting a live version that's better than the studio version.

tangent: Change -vs- Memphis

"Everyone Wants To Know the World"

Alfred, you're slipping.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 3 March 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

To know is to rule!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 March 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

try ruling without knowing! can't do it.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Good point, guys.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

I find myself consistently and cosntantly unable to choose a favorite between "Shout," EWTRTW and "Head Over Heels". Obviously all are perfect tens.

Joe Jackson, he's OK.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

head over heels is pretty great.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Taking Sides: Different for Girls vs. Donnie Darko

As for the songs, I like them both but "Head Over Heels" is greatness

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

(Donnie Darko was supposed to be a link, too, but no big deal since everyone knows it...)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Jackson's first two albums, "Look Sharp!" and "I'm the Man," are flat-out great, unless you're of the "all Elvis Costello and Graham Parker suck" sort.

word -- matter of fact, i prefer BOTH of these joe jackson albums to the roughly-contemporaneous stuff by elvis costello b/c those jackson albums are just more fun than EC. even when JJ is bitching or whining about whatever. graham parker just sounds like some sour brit trying to be a low-budget bruce springsteen, but doing it REALLY BADLY (not that i'm a big springsteen fan, mind you).

as for this thread's topic, "head over heels" -- sometimes 80s beatlesque pop IS a good thing. "it's different for girls" ain't no slouch, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 3 March 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

Both great.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 4 March 2006 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

"HOH" by a mile, though "EWTRTW" is far better

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 4 March 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

Total tuff question. I think "Head Over Heels" because the encapsulated the hott love for the unbridled librarian in the video. And for the exuberant "Yeah" after the keys solo. Those are both cool.

But at the same time, I cover "It's Different For Girls" in one of the bands I play in, and I have a real cool connection with the song. AND Graham Maby is the coolest rock bass player ever.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Saturday, 4 March 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

just for y'all i am drunk and listening to 'head over heels'. it is already curing my hangover.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 4 March 2006 04:11 (nineteen years ago)

er, it's probably what y'all love about it, but Head Over Heels is more pompous emoting from Orzabal and the other dude (maybe less painfully so than other songs of theirs, but still) Not a fan of JJ at all, but I rememeber that song being decent.

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 4 March 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

"It's Different For Girls" > "Head Over Heels" >>>>>>>>>>>>> Donnie Darko.

Merryweather (scarlet), Saturday, 4 March 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Got The Time" > "Head Over Heels" > "It's Different For Girls"

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Saturday, 4 March 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Head over Heels very good, but come on, "It's Different for Girls" is the heartbreaking highlight of the whole first-class 79-80 Joe Jackson output!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 4 March 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure what these two songs have in common.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 4 March 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't even heard that Joe Jackson song but "Head Over Heels" (along with most of the rest of 'Songs From The Big Chair') has proven to be surprisingly timeless. I don't know what TFF were on when they recorded that album, but man...

Bimble The Nimble (Bimble...), Sunday, 5 March 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

"this is my four leaf clover"

retroboy, Sunday, 5 March 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Head Over Heels" was not Tears For Fears at their best. "Different For Girls" all the way even though "Is She Really Going Out With Him" was his one and only masterpiece.
