Julie Driscoll (Tippetts) - 1969 Album

Anybody a fan of this album (I think it was her first fully solo effort)? I think this may be an obscure, underrated (at least minor) classic...has kind of a Denny-era Fairport Convention-meets-big band sound. Has Chris Spedding on lead guitar, and a lot of the Canterbury prog/Soft Machine associates on it (Elton Dean, Mark Charig, Nick Evans, Karl Jenkins, I think)

"Those That We Love" and "The Choice" are two excellent songs.

wow. i didn't know of that album. i'm a HUGE fan though.

i've got:
68's Streetnoise (probably very similar to the album you're talking about)
69's album with Brian Auger "Jools & Brian" (more a funk/soul album)
75's "Streetnoise" (her crowning glory. an amazing album of out pop similar to Rock Bottom)
& 78's album w/Auger "Encore" (a fusion-pop album).

all of them are amazing.

did you get that on vinyl or cd?

i've got that Keith Tippet album also. got it when i was fiending on the Vertigo Swirl label. it's a little free blowing for my current tastes. I do really like the song "Black Horse" which combines a really nice funk beat with crazy blowing on top. reminds me of Art Ensemble of Chicago

I really like that one, but I think Sunset Glow is the masterpiece. That's the one that reminded me of the hauntedness of Rock Bottom. The first one is more like a Trinity album, like the best parts of Streetnoise. Used to see cheap U.S. vinyl copies of it all the time (it was reissued on the dodgy Springboard label at one time).

oops. i accidentally typed Streetnoise twice. the second one from 75 should be Sunset Glow.

has anyone heard the albums she did with Keith? Couple in Spirit" sounds AMAZING

team jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 4 March 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

did you get that on vinyl or cd?

I have it on CD; One-Way Records (an 'archival' CD label that issued all the old, totally forgotten stuff; I think they're still around, actually, but not the same).

I don't think I have heard Dedicated to You... yet. I have the Centipede Septober Energy CD and Sunset Glow as well... it's been a while since I've listened to them, though. I had Streetnoise a long time ago but sold it impulsively... :(

Holy Moly!!!! I have NOT heard that Couple In Spirit record and I MUST!!!!

By the way, a great 2CD set to pick up is SoupSongs: The Music of Robert Wyatt (on the Voiceprint label in the U.K.). It's a tribute concert to Wyatt led by trombonist Annie Whitehead, and the band includes Julie Tippetts, Phil Manzanera, Didier Malherbe (of Gong)...Tippetts puts in an incredible vocal performance on "Sea Song", and a number of other Wyatt tunes. I was really impressed with the concert.

i was reading about that Centipede album recently. seemed alternately intriguing and impenetrable. from reading about it, seemed like it would be a mix of Escalator Over the Hill (which i like) & something by Alan Silva (which i'm too scared to listen to). seemed obvious that Marcello was one of the few people to mention it on ILM.

If you like Escalator, then Septober Energy oughta be right up your alley. Stick with it, and it goes into some moving and beautiful directions.

found Septober Energy and you're right, it's very much like Escalator. from that first track, i even thought it was Carla Bley's arrangements (is it?). it does get pretty freaked out, but nothing i can't handle.

Replaced my scratched 99 cent vinyl copy of Streetnoise w/an import CD last year. Boy it was worth it. Wish I had $ for more!

I bought it last weekend for $6. Isn't the going rate on eBay like $10-15?

I have only heard "This Wheel's On Fire" but that song has kind of made me curious about both Driscoll and Brian Auger.
