my take: the joke's worn off. Diplo's exhausted it ... for me anyway. although local indie DJs are finally catching on ... can we do something else?

electro beats meets sampling ... insert verse, and hit play. it was fun, now it's just ... eh.

funk carioca is still ace! it's just as good without the obvious samples, although any funk carioca compilation without the 'papa don't preach' strings or 'sweet dreams' riff feels woefully incomplete.

i agree. it's real music for a great number of people, and i'm not trying to get into a discussion about authenticity ... just saying ... hasn't this type of music been sold as a "Kid Sister" to the "My Buddy" of hip hop or dirty south? Unless you go to a Bhangra night or something ... guaranteed to hear "Stay Fly" or something before or after this.

Plus ...

Sick of hearing "Popzuda Rock ‘N Roll" ... and that's the thing. We're only really hearing tracks off of Diplo mixes thrown around to and fro ... it gets old to me.

Also, like I said, in the States it's always been sold as some sort of novelty or "insider" info for white hip hop kids. Snore.

well, no offense to diplo, but he's not funk carioca. (thanks, btw, for getting it right in the thread title - it's not "baile funk." pet peeve of mine.) shit's not hard to find on the P2Ps; just start with a couple of artists that have been comped a bunch (deize tigrona, bonde do tigrão, dj alexandre, os carrascos, vanessinha picatchu, bonde neurose, mr. catra, dennis DJ.... etc), do some googling... the usual way you learn about a genre that's new to you. plenty of worthwhile shit out there.

hate the outsider buzz all you want, but know how to separate that from the music itself. being mad at funk carioca because of its current hype would be a little like writing off os mutantes just because beck made'em trendy for about 10 minutes.

Diplo's production style definately isn't funk carioca, but ... he does use a lot of it on his mixes. Yeah, I know ... that there are better tracks out there ... but isn't part of the whole deal that it's like a Brazilian take on Miami bass and electro plus samba culture in general? a reappropriation of those genres within a different context? so ... in a way it's built on cliche. that's not a normative statement, just an observation.

i'm not throwing the baby out with the bath water, but ... yeah, there is some good shit. i'm just tired of hearing certain tracks. and like i said ... it seems like "Popzuda Rock N Roll" is fast becoming the "Evenflow"/"Smells Like Teen Spirit" of this genre.

the best tracks in this genre i've heard ... i've usually heard once or twice at a friend's house.

well, maybe it's "part of the whole deal" to northern listeners that it's a brazilian take on miami bass and electro, but i doubt many brazilian fans could give a fuck; they just like to dance to it.

and again, hating the genre because you're tired of hearing that edu K track is a bit like hating all techno because you're over "rocker."

(actually, that's not precise either. edu K is making funk-oriented tracks, but dude also comes from outside the scene, though he did team up w/ deize tigrona for the track. i'm not saying that makes him less "real," but at the same time i'm not surprised that an outsider will have more success in the north; he knows how to market to other outsiders. i'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about bonde do role - non-black (from the photos i've seen), non-rio kids who, according to jace clayton [who remixed one of their tunes] grew up on a ton of tigerbeatish experimental shit - for the simple fact that their outlook is a lot closer to a northern hipster zeitgeist.)

Even out of the people on ILM, probably 95% owe their introduction to funk carioca to Diplo and his ilk, if not directly than at least indirectly for creating the buzz around it.

Actually, I would say that Diplo is in fact a major part of the movement at this point. He has many fans in Rio (my friend saw a young favela boy show Diplo his "Wesley" and "Pentz" tattoos on his arms, respectively) and collaborates and DJs extensively there. I know he's not really "authentic" and is seen by some here as an exoticist dabbler, but I think Brazil has a more inclusionary and less motive suspicious scene than what we experience here in the US.

Also, having been to Rio, I have certainly heard Cariocas refer to the music as "Baile Funk" many times.

that's interesting, i didn't know that about diplo. it's cool, i won't hate on that.
though i still take issue w/ the "funk"/"baile funk" thing, based on explicit comments on the subject by a colleague of marlboro's. but i could be misunderstanding something too, i never (well, seldom) write off that possibility. but as i've been led to believe, "baile funk" refers specifically to the events. i suppose it's possible that the term is mutating into a description of the music (like "rave" before it), but i doubt it, only because "funk" modifies "baile," not the other way around. (though of course if it became "música baile funk," then the grammar would work.)

Actually, you know what, you're right about the distinction. I was corrected on that point by none other than Mr. Catra himself who said that in english the correct term for the music is "Funk, Carioca Style." I had forgotten that, although any Carioca will know what you're talking about if say, you're at the market and ask for some "baile funk" CDs.

I know Diplo's whole thing is about "spreading the love of music" and that people who question what he does or how he does it are just "haters," but I think he and his followers should probably question whether it's a good thing that although thousands(?) of people now know about a genre they might not otherwise if not for him, they can't have a discussion about it without bringing up him or his involvement. Remember when people who wanted to give exposure to obscure or overlooked music started labels (not just boutique 12" labels) to distribute the music and make sure the musicians got royalties for it, instead of just spinning it at rock critic parties (whereafter the critics write articles about the DJ, not the music he was playing) and sending mp3s to Lemon Red?

I enjoy baile funk. Don't really care about Diplo too much and I don't go out to see indie hipsters DJ (why the hell would I?) so I've had far from an overdose of the genre. The shameless use of samples from the most un-hip sources ("Who let the dogs out?!") along with the co-opting of more credible music (apparently Marlboro put the hook to "Rock the Casbah" into a song without knowing what the source of the sample was) shows the indiscriminate and, I think, brilliantly utilitarian approach to musical creation that has as its one aim dancefloor fodder.

i'm by no means hating on the genre. to say that i am is to misconstrue what i said. i'm tired of the four or five tracks that everyone has and plays as their "funk carioca" set. most of it is from Diplo. i'm not disputing the importance of this music for a great number of people.

the techno:rock::hiphop:funkcarioca comment stung a bit, but it would have stung more if i was actually saying that i think funk carioca is shit. didn't say that, but i appreciate the contrast, and that's exactly why i wouldn't say "fuck funk carioca ... that shit's lame." never said that.

i am tired of certain tracks. very tired. and from what i've heard ... it seems to be a really specific format, and the tracks i am tired of most closely follow that format. electro beat, sample, verse vocals ... go!

you know i respect your opinion, and the opinion of others who like this genre, but i'm just frankly sick of hearing Diplo mix after Diplo mix being played at every club. i would feel the same if it were Gabriel Ananda or Gui Boratto.

so ... no hating here. just tired of seeing "Diplo Remix" after nearly every record I see or hear. although he is definately talented. i'm just oversaturated with it right now.

I've always found funk carioca a little boring, to be honest, plus the vocals often get stuck in my head in a very irritating way. There are some good tracks. I also don't think Diplo's mixing skills are that great.

yeah ... Beauty Bar, Arrow Bar, Milk ... even the Rickshaw! also when I go downtown there are all of those fancy retail places with DJs, and they are always playing those tracks.

also, I went to Club 6 last night to see a free Mix Master Mike set, and the resident DJ was fucking tearing it up with dancehall and funk carioca. he was just ... disgusting. it was so much fun, and he managed to do it without one of the tracks i mentioned.

seeing it outside of white boy indie scenester nights was personally refreshing, and reinvigorating. much better to hear something that would get played by DJ Marlboro next to a Sean Paul remix than a fucking bullshit Bloc Party track.

also, Philip, did you know that San Francisco has 2 reggaeton radio stations? they play funk about half of the time. And ... that shit is all over the Mission. Thankfully, and with good mix tapes for cheap.

I dunno, I think the second essay records comp shows some interesting developments - the music seems less poppy and more ravey than before. Lots of cut-up jitter riffs, and the beats are becoming quite complex. Hardly any of the tracks use a straightforward electro beat.

Is there a term of art for the curiously loping percussion loop used on most tracks? The one that sounds like trolls playing complex skip-rope games underground?

Probably! I'd have to listen to those to find out. It's the rhythm that sounds like a really heavy bongo pattern, rather than the basic electro beats.

The older I get, the more bored I get of this sort of posturing. If there's a trend of a certain kind of dance music that happens to get embraced by hipsters and played at all the parties, and it also happens to be fun to dance to, I say STFU and dance. That's why it was made, and I don't think Brazilian djs care whether white kids in Brooklyn are enjoying their music out of context, even if they all have big fat smug grins on their faces.
